For me he is head and shoulders above all of his contemporaries for one reason, no, not his chops.....his composing skills

It's one thing being able to go widdle widdle eeeeee on the guitar at speed but it's another thing entirely to compose hundreds of rock and jazz toons

Funny, Emerald Beyond is one of my least favourites. I do like most of his albums, but the Mahavishnu Mk1 era is probably the stuff I play the most.

There was a great US band called The Mahavishnu Project that covered the early material. All superb musicians and they were very true to the original style, but they improvised and didn’t slavishly copy. They only made a couple of albums sadly.

I think he's truly underrated as a composer.

I saw Remember Shakti with Srinivas (RIP), Selvaganesh. Amazing. Utterly breathtaking. Music being made at the absolute highest level.

McLaughlin....excelling in  and revolutionising one musical area would usually be enough, but to do so in three...

Miles was good at picking them.

I love this too. Oh Lord supreme, supreme, let me fulfill my dream let me fulfill my dream...

I am not religious but I love belting that out.

Great album. I do think Birds of Fire is the best, because McG is absolutely feral and vicious on that album. That solo on the first track is like spitting fire.

And the live album with Mahabishnu mki is great.

    Apocalypse has its moments too.

I think my favourite single track is The Life Divine off Love, Devotion, Surender. You can tell that Santana is pushing himself as far as he can go. The wah wah section he does always grabs me. McG’s 12 string is on it. And Cobham on drums. What can you say? A complete master.

Great thread Hoots. I find McG a compelling musician and an inspirational man.

Here is a great short beautiful piece that demonstrates the writers love of odd meter and complex structure.....and it may be the worlds longest and greatest arpeggio

Indeed. One of my favourites is "After The Rain" where he plays John Coltrane tunes (and more) in a trio with Elvin Jones, Coltrane's drummer.  And here's the concert -

As well ones of his summits are on the Miles albums Bitches Brew and Tribute to Jack Johnson.

@boogieman I saw the original Shakti in Glasgow with support act Kevin coyne

This pairing was almost as badly thought out as Hendrix /monkees
    Lmao. What an awesome bill.

I saw Kevin Coyne supporting Richard Thompson once. KC had to ask somebody from the audience to come up on stage to tune his guitar for him.
