What are the best Live albums by power trios / 3 + singer.

What's Hot
fretmeisterfretmeister Frets: 24189
I’m looking for arrangement ideas. So what live albums by power trios or GBD + singer can you recommend?

Ideally without hidden off stage band members. Don’t mind the odd example of the singer in a 4 piece dabbling on keys / guitar, but generally I’m wanting guitar, bass, drums and voice.

I have Cream, Kings X, Van Halen, Mr Big, but the more the merrier especially for different styles.

ta.

U2 - Under a Blood Red Sky and Live at Slane Castle. The latter has some off-stage keys & synths for later material but is just the 4 of them for the most part.

Do you have Rush and Hendrix?

  • Bauhaus - Press the Eject and Give me the Tape. There’s a second vocalist on one track on the rerelease version but otherwise just the four of them. Daniel Ash’s playing was often feedback and walls of noise as much as conventional playing. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it is fantastically live sounding.

There must be some Hendrix ( the Radio One or BBC Sessions albums for ‘live in the studio’ versions) and some Rory Gallagher ( Live in Europe is pre keyboards).

There must be some ZZ Top, possibly Live in Germany which is just the audio of one half of the Double Down live dvd. They certainly had off stage sequencers later in their career although dropped them again. Billy live often underplays - a riff that runs through the song in the studio will be omitted whilst he sings

Rory Gallagher's "Beat Club Sessions" is tremendous, as is the "Live in Europe" album.

There is a ZZ Top bootleg (I think) "Live in Essen" where they really tear it up. The live side of "Fandango" is also good.

Look at some of Robin Trower's live stuff, a great band with James Dewar's fantastic vocals.

Plenty - just no live albums.

  • I would bet the Police must have a couple of live albums. Great live band, for sure.

  • John Mayer Trio - "Try!"  album is pretty impressive. Mayer may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's three absolutely shit-hot musicians at the top of their game.

"Live!" is fantastic - that was the Police at the peak of their powers.
"Certifiable" from the more recent cash-in reunion is lousy, IMO. Sounds as phoned-in as it probably was.

  • Queen must have a couple.
    Extreme (Wembley Mercury concert)
Rush - A Show of Hands
    The Police - Synchronicity Live
    My trading feedback

is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

I love Queen - but live it's not often that there wasn't something going on in the background. Keys or Spike strumming away off stage.

Just a thought though - Was he just doubling BM parts or playing something different?

I'd second Rory's Live in Europe! Good call.

  • Was going to suggest A Noise Severe by The Gathering. But they've got a keyboard player. So I won't suggest that then, even though it's brilliant (and you can watch it on YouTube).
