Devil Woman by Cliff Richard, argh, can't believe I just admitted to that!

Bloody great song, about as close as Mr Richard ever got to making a rock record.

Can't agree there, in fact some would say the last decent record Cliff made was Move It :-)

I really don't understand all the hate for Nickelback.
Because they're appalling - a good illustration of everything that's wrong with rock music. Does that help?

Set The Fire To The Third Bar by them Irish fellas - Cold Patrol or Snow Play or somesuch.
Snore Patrol. But it's saved by Martha Wainwright.

Oh - I forgot about Angels!

OK, so there are two songs by Robbie Williams that I think are good.

Which should explain why I hate them.

Since they do appear to be quite widely hated I would expect it would also go some way to explaining why it's not just my opinion :).

Ok, I suppose my question is probably deeper than what I suggested up there somewhere ^.

    Humour me, if you please?

There are many bands I don’t like from The Beatles to Oasis but I just don’t buy their records. Simples! I don’t go out of my way to actively hate them, which seems to be the response commonly evoked by Nickelback. For whatever reason they seem to be a band that people love to hate.

And yet, nine studio albums, tens of millions of records sold, many music awards won and many more nominations. Successful concert tours, sponsorships, endorsements etc, etc.

So they can’t be as awful as the haters would have you believe and also counters your argument above.

So again, I ask, why so much hate for Nickelback?

I’m not trying to defend their honour or anything, I couldn’t care one way or the other, I just don’t understand why one band can illicit so much active derision en mass.

Or, are they just a guilty secret? Many people who claim to hate them actually like them but don’t want to admit it, in much the same way that I begrudgingly admit that Bon Jovi are probably quite good.

That’s just off the wall, absolutely no evidence to uphold that suggestion anymore than stating that Renault is everything that’s wrong with the French car industry.

Here’s another thought, though. Just popped into my head; is it a popular opinion bias? Enough people, or the right people, have voiced a negative opinion that the larger population are swayed or just don’t want to voice the now unpopular opinion, so they go along with it and uphold it?

It’s a very real phenomenon in which social science studies have been conducted and might explain, at least in part, why Nickelback seem to garner so much hatred?

    Shrugs.

    Good question.

Although to be absolutely clear, they're not some kind of 'guilty secret' for me (I don't have such things in music, I'm quite happy to admit to the crap I like!) - I intensely detest them to the point I cannot listen to them without feeling irrationally angry that such appalling music exists. If there's any means of turning off the source, I will. If there isn't I will try to do something to distract myself.

I also strongly dislike Oasis and Radiohead largely because I find the vocals grating and the guitar playing annoying, but I can just about listen to them and I don't think they're genuinely bad in the same way - I'll admit to liking a few Radiohead songs and even one Oasis one, as above.

For what it's worth I detest the Lighthouse Family almost as much as Nickelback :). And I know I'm not alone in that either...

If anyone has seen the recent interview on YouTube with Rick Beato and Tim Pierce there’s some surprising dislike from Tim to Nickleback. Because they were successful and went down the line of chug chug chug ( technical term) they took all the interesting guitar parts out of commercial rock music.
I tend to find modern, commercial rock music ( Nickleback or Foo Fighters or whatever) one dimensional with annoying having a tricky bowel movement vocals. But today I’ve been mostly listening to Perry Como so I appreciate that I’m largely out of kilter with the young people.

That’s interesting. I’ll have to look that one up. I quite like Tim Pierce but have never heard him badmouth anyone as yet.

Not a massive fan of Rick Beato, though. If ever there was a man who loved the colour of his own opinion.......

Foo Fighters are interesting. Like you I’d throw them in the same bucket as Nickelback but everyone loves them.

Bold mention of Foo Fighters, a very popular band, almost the opposite of Nickelback in terms of general-public rock-band acceptance...  But I've grown to dislike FF over the years as they seem to keep re-writing the same two or three songs over and over and over again.  The first couple of albums were much more interesting.

That said, I wouldn't have characterised those particular bands as having "tricky bowel movement" vocals.  But perhaps understandable if you're in a Perry Como frame of mind....

Well for one thing in interviews I have read Chad Kroeger seems like an arrogant irritating tit, second only to Yngwie.

I probably wouldn’t say he was bad mouthing them really but explaining how between music made on computers and rock without layered guitar parts ( like Nickleback) there was very little of interest or to play in modern commercial music.

She wore a brand New Jersey, that’s what she did wear.

I try not to be stuck in 1980 (or 1959 in the case of Perry Como) but the appeal of the Foo Fighters is beyond me. I find their basic thing a bit dull and every FF song just seems indistinguishable; but I appreciate that sounds like my father talking about, well, almost any recording from The Beatles onwards so it may be just my failure to appreciate them.

I'm struggling with Springsteen, I really don't understand his popularity, Born to Run is ok
He’s been quite patchy for the last twenty or so, but overall I would say he’s one of the greatest songwriters of the last fifty years.

But I don’t get the popularity of AC/DC at all, let alone Nickelback, so we’re all different...
