I have considered it a fact for 40 years that Gilmour did the solo on this track, used it regularly as my interesting fact, turns out it was bollox, wtf

At least we can console ourselves that Bob Holness played the saxophone solo on Baker Street.

No, it was by the wonderful guitarist that is Ian Bairnson.

Search YouTube and look at his fantastic body of work with Pilot and The Alan Parson's Project and even his jazzier solo performances.

    A true unsung hero

I too thought that it was Gilmour for years, found out a couple of years ago and was most surprised.
He helped Kate getting started in music didn't he? If so I guess it came from that.

Ian Bairnson is the only other person I know who uses a sixpence to play (along with Mr May)

Pilot also played on some Bay City Rollers records, but I can forgive them because of the intro to "Magic".

Yes, he gave her studio time to produce a professional-sounding demo, and then made sure it got to the right people.

He also played on some Buck's Fizz stuff and contributed some co-writes for them.

Pilot were essentially the band on the first few Kate Bush albums
