Excuse my ignorance but what's the difference between a powered and an unpowered unit? Can I plug this directly into a powered studio monitor?

Yes - unpowered means you'd need a power amp to utilise a normal guitar cab or Powered Kemper.

This would be fine to connect to powered studio monitors.

Seems a good price to me. I love my Kemper - took me an age to dial it in but it’s the best practice and recording tool I’ve ever had. 

I think the issue is some people expect them to replace real amps completely - I think there’s room in anyone’s arsenal for both. I play through some nice open back headphones at night and it’s inspirational.
