Techy questions

Does anybody know of any good (and Free) linux/windows based development tools similar to MS access.
I want need to develop an application with a web front end.
Now my programming knowledge is very stale (fortran 77 and bbc basic programming back in the 80s).

I've already developed the application in Excel and started down the Access route, but these are all single user type apps.
So not really suitable to what I want to do (An IT design accelerator for integration into a system orchestrator app)

  • No...but if you have HTML knowledge and can follow instructions, Ruby on Rails is a good, quick way to get web apps up and running. Look for tutorials on using Rails scaffolds. Works much better on Linux than it does Windows, mind (just my personal experience).

  • To do it properly LAMP is what you want.

    Or it's windows cousin:

If you want something similar to Powerpoint then check out Open Office Base

    I'd recommend the former though.

  • I just wish they'd make access multi user with sqlserver behind it.
Have managed to build up my app really quickly with no programming so far all logic is based on database entries

Without wishing to turn this into a "my language is better" pissing contest, "properly" and "PHP" rarely deserve to be in the same sentence ;)

  • I'm not a big fan either but for this kinda thing it's so widespread that it's probably the closest thing to an industry standard.

Unless I was building something that needed an app server I'd choose php.

  • I've been working with SAP for 20 years now. Abap is actually nice and easy. You just need to concentrate on what you want to achieve without having to think about all the user authorisation stuff.

  • I would quite like to achieve never having to touch SAP GUI again. :)

  • Sapgui? Not used that in years.

  • Its very possible I'm not doing things the best way. Luckily my involvement is limited to the integration points between our product and SAP. So most of the time /we10 and /we19 cover most of my needs.

From what I've seen despite the money to be made I'd still rather eat razorblades than work on it full time :D
