I sometimes worry about you guys.
Me too. Especially as we've just had the "vocal fry" thread.

Anyone who uses that amount of vocal fry can eat a big bowl of my day-after-curry poo. Sorry, this pap is seriously, seriously not my thing. No creativity in the writing, arranging, production or message of the song. No questioning and seemingly from the original video, no honesty either. Other than that, it's amazing.

Or maybe I'm too deep and too old for this kind of material. Maybe I'm missing something.
I'm sure she loves your musical output too :)
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

I really am not interested what she thinks of my musical output.
I don't dislike commercialism for its own sake. I care about quality. And I suspect that left to her own musical devices she might come up with some OK material/songs/production but the first track sounds so horribly processed, like so much stuff, and so affected that I find it hard to listen to.

I would like to continue working musically in a world where I don't have to play/write/produce anything like that.

The older I get, the more I’m becoming a fan of female pop acts. Can hand on heart say I really like Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, St Vincent, Girls Aloud....

She sounds the same as every other nondescript female ‘pop’ singer with an effected voice. Bland and instantly forgettable.

I’d genuinely like someone to explain why she is ‘special’ and ‘brilliant’.
Why is [insert name of guitarist who is very popular among guitarists] 'special' and 'brilliant'?

There are quite a few of those I truly don't get either.

Yep, I think she's rather good, and I love the anime aesthetic of that vid, it's really well conceived and directed.

Put me in mind of the barmy movie Redline, which has only the most marginal grip on a plot but is just an explosion of colour and kinetiscism(?). You watch it for the ride and it is what it is.

Must admit, I'm developing a soft spot for her too. Physical is an absolute belter of a pop song.

    Laugh, love, live, learn.

Me too. NB I didn't insult her. I just don't like what she does, which I can separate from who she is.

Quite right. And I love what I do. And I'm sure she loves what she does and you love what she does too. We're all winning here.

Hmmmm...with the popular guitarist you’re talking about at least there is some craft, and some have undoubtedly brilliant talent regardless if you like them or not. I can see why Jeff Beck or Mozart are in the brilliant category, just not my cuppa tea.

Maybe it’s just the idea of old Dua that’s brilliant.

What you are talking about is the old objective "good" and objective "bad" idea which probably has some legs if you are talking about what is technically superior, but music is art, it isn't sport.  That idea is not of much interest to me really, personally, YMMV, youtube is full of technically superb musicians who will never make a good pop song.

A lot of talented people are involved in producing any pop song, with the added challenge a more "worthy" guitarist may not face of avoiding teens skipping the track before 30 seconds and not triggering a stream payment.

The other thing they almost all tend to be is exceptionally hard-working, driven and professional.  Dua has learnt her craft, and continues to learn it, and on stage I suspect puts on a damn good show for the punters, which is after all, her job.

So you don't think she's a highly talented singer, writer and performer?

    Right.....

  • Yep, she has an extremely talented group of people behind her too and a great manager who’s name escapes me. Definitely one of musics biggest rising stars.

Some will say boring, formulaic but there’s nothing wrong with that. Good music is good music. I’m not looking to be blown away by musicianship or be ‘moved’ every time I pop my headphones on.

    Future Nostalgia is great.

    Right.....
Well you asked... akin to many popsters she only writes a fraction of her songs. Singing is OK. Adele fits the description better as she is more involved in her own songs, production and doesn't rely on looks to carry any gaps in quality.

I'd take Niia or a dozen other pop genre singers over Dua Lipa but either way wish her luck, at least until she gets too old for her target market and they abandon her after they graduate and move on to the next thing.
