I found Marillion rather dull after Fish left, but I am a big fan of Steve Rothery's Ghosts of Pripyat album. I think it's his best stuff since Fish buggered off.

Lou Reed - Transformer and/or Berlin.
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

Does it need to be while staying in the band?

If not you are going to end up including John Lennon and George Harrison.

And Clapton, if we're being bloody-minded about it :)

For guitarists who make genuine side projects whilst the band's still going on, I'm stumped for now. I'll be back to this one, I need to relisten to Stone Gossard's Brad albums...

I do love Ghost of Pripyat, superb record. Weirdly I'm not a big fan of Fish-era Marillion. I'd rather just listen to Genesis.
But I love the later stuff, Brave in particular is a masterpiece.

Edit: on topic though, I rather like the stuff Adrian Smith has done outside of Maiden.

I'm a bit of fan of Slash - Apocalyptic Love as an album but is that solo or another band?

I was thinking that was another band, it's his post GNR band really. But still some great stuff he's recorded with Myles.

He was the producer on this record but also contributed vocals and guitar but for me and that would be Nuno Bettencourt on Dweezil Zappa's 'Confessions' album

I think Richie samborra has had good solo output.

On the gnr theme some of Izzy's solo stuff is good.

    John frusciante another contender.

Can we include female guitarists? You've only said "away from HIS band".
