Richard Thompson can be added to my list.

Can't stand Fairport convention but his solo work is some of my favourite music.

David Gilmour's first solo album is excellent, I only discovered it a couple of days ago.
His second album is great too - once you get past the 80s production.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Keef’s solo albums have all been pretty enjoyable.

    Stone Gossard - Bayleaf

Nina Gordon - Tonight and the Rest of My Life (that's a "her band" rather than "his band")

    Alex Lifeson - Victor

Captain Sensible. He's had loads. Meathead is my fave.

Don't listen to it though. I guarantee you won't like it. Very 80's and only for the fans really. Stick with John Lennon etc if that's your bag.

    Susanna Hoffs

Her three covers albums with Matthew Sweet are amazing. She's done some others too, I should really get round to having a listen to those as well...

Mark Tremonti's solo stuff is far better than Creed.

I should listen to those.  I was really into Matthew Sweet's albums for a long time, but at some point I just stopped buying them.  Haven't heard any of his more recent stuff (i.e. last 20 years!).

I like Chris Squire's 'Fish out of Water' a lot, although a bassist. He signed the cd album for me.

Steve Vai from Frank Zappa’s band :)

Which reminds me of John Paul Jones's Zooma.

Ooo I like Creed and I enjoy Alter bridge, but I don't think I've heard his solo stuff.

    Good thread btw

Deke Leonard's Iceberg album has some great stuff on it, including the opener "Razorblade and Rattlesnake".

I'm fairly sure this was before he actually assembled the Iceberg band.

Can we include female guitarists? You've only said "away from HIS band".

Who did you have in mind?

My vote would be for Scotty Moore's album The Guitarist That Changed The World. It's the album that got him fired and is basically a 'best of' Elvis album sans the King. It also has a singing group for the vocals rather than an individual singer which sounds weird at first, not to say, a little bit twee. It does, however, work quite well once you've given it a few listens and the main purpose of the album is to bring Moore's work centre stage which it does very well.
