This one is great from a compositional perspective ..

If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

Metallica - Battery. Played loud it's just huge!

Pretty much any Gospel artist... they do all the best intros IMO

Difficult to recall many at the moment, but a classic for me is Dream Theater's Pull me under.

    I think best ='s favourite

I agree with @axisus in to many to mention - Many classics, Layla, Sweet Home Ala etc are great for a reason

Yet sometimes I like songs that start off with little and it builds up as more instrumentation added - Stevie Wonder Master Blaster - Black Eyed Peas I gotta feeling - The drum intro on Toto and Rosanna because a) a great groove and b) few/no drummers can play it properly

I like Billy Idol Rebel Yell

I always loved the start of Paradise by All About Eve, especially when they did it live at Glastonbury.

This always comes to mind when I think of a great intro. Drums, bass, feedback into pick slide.

Also this just because it opens with the t-rex from Jurassic Park then that relentless riff

Not really, intro's are interesting, and I like to see the different approaches taken to what can be a tricky situation once all of your intro ideas have been used up! They are also quite important since they are the first thing that everybody hears. It's a very underated topic  :)

I think they've already cornered that market, so everybody else would always be an imitator  :)

Zep - When The Leve Breaks - great pumping drum sound
Hendrix - Voodoo Child - funky guitar, prepares you for the overdriven blues onslaught
My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow - delicious wall of sound.
Sabbath - Hole In The Sky - Heavy as anything
    Floyd - Have a Cigar - Groovy

And for something off the wall
