Rusty Cage by Soundgarden. Two guitars playing call and answer riffs high up the neck with the wah cocked. The two riffs get coser together builiding up momentum, then the drums and main riff kick in which is a variation of the intro riff using the low E string tuned down to B. Perfection.

  • Far too many pop into my head!

Probably the first that springs to mind, probably due to it being basically the soundtrack to my early teenage years, would be:

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

    Honourable mentions go to:

Foxy Lady - JHE (I've got "Wayne's World" to thank for that one!)

Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band

Here's a cracker, it's late and I'm listening to The Hatfields (again) and thought of this thread when this came on.

Unsurprisingly (from me), an iconic tune from the Canterbury canon. Written by Dave Stewart and featuring the beautiful Northettes, the title is worth the entrance fee alone.

"Lobster In Cleavage Probe / Gigantic Land Crabs In Earth Takeover Bid"

    I love The Northettes..

"And in the end, all our troubles vanish, melt away.....
After all is said and done we will fly, like a tea tray in the sky
..so don't be scared of the lob-sters or molluscs"

Ah that feels better. Isn't music the greatest thing?

Not really, intro's are interesting, and I like to see the different approaches taken to what can be a tricky situation once all of your intro ideas have been used up! They are also quite important since they are the first thing that everybody hears. It's a very underated topic  :)
agree - but still no actual measurement for 'best' - just a huge debate

Interesting point that it is the first thing you hear and I agree - Apparently the 'trend' today is effectively no/little intro, due to streaming, as some 'collective data' shows you only have a short time to get the customers attention, otherwise they move on - So no Smoke on the Water, Stairway to Heaven or Hotel California on that basis

Yes, I was watching one of those Rick Beato things and the big songs on Spotify don't have much in the way of intros. Historically it was to provide a pad for DJs to talk over as were fade out outros. You rarely got to hear intros and outros properly unless you bought the record ( and if you had Chris Evans on the radio he saw guitar solos as another opportunity to talk).
