Two off the top of my head but let's face it, we could all choose loads.

Sails of Charon- Scorpions. Uli on top form
    Wildhearted Son- The Cult

As both of us mentioned Sails maybe that wins!Apparently it quotes Caravan by Duke Ellington but on a quick spin of Caravan I didn't think so. Maybe better ears than mine would pick it up.

@EricTheWeary ;Ah...I hear it! About 1'50" on the Scorps tune (from 2015 Taken By Force remaster on 'potify).

    I love that track...1977...face melting!

Not as good an intro as Baker Street though ;)

Too many to mention, but just to join in the fun how about "Pool Hall Richard" by The Faces, or "Stay with me"...

Wait. hang on, @PhilW1 is right. There are too many to bother.
I have listened to everything posted in this thread, and many would have escaped my attention under normal circumstances. The intro is definitely an art form, and not all are created equally.
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

  • Musically, I'm definitely with the OP. In fact I played Just Like Heaven at the last gig I did, last November (I thought The Cure an appropriate band to play, in the circumstances). But despite being a child of the New Wave, and generally having little time for 'classic rock', I have to say I think that Gimme Shelter has one of the best intros of all time. The only thing that undermines that intro, for me, is the way the rest of the song dissolves into blues noodling. But the intro is pristine, which I guess is why it has been used in so many ads, etc.

So many, but the one in my head today is...

    Blondie - Call Me

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

  • How about Stranglers 'Toiler on the Sea' which has several (fab) intros for the price of one.

    Also Bob Marley 'Misty Morning'.

Best? I dunno, that could be a bunfight!

Lately I like this. Comparatively low key, almost country-like intro. You know there's a punch in the face on its way though. :)

The Edge is phenomenal at coming up with intros that are original and also instantly recognisable.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it
