Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Alfa

What's Hot
Well I'm a little underwhelmed I must say.
Performance is bad, barely getting 20 FPS with a 1070 and a 2700x.
Missions are impossible to perform with no instructions/tutorials.
Yes some nice new textures on space ships and new planetary surface graphics, but otherwise
the graphics look really old, looks like they are using a very old graphics engine.

For an Alpha that's essentially been in skunkworks development for seven years, and active development for three years...I expected something that looks better than Unreal Tournament did 20 years ago.

This was their big chance to show off, and it's actually looking more like their usual attempts at new gameplay. In their own description of the back-seat functionality, they build a bare minimum viable product, and see if enough people use it to justify finishing the job.

This wasn't the time to do that. I get that this is supposed to be an alpha test of the networking and base framework, but I'm not convinced that there's anywhere enough time between now and release for them to bring it up to AAA title quality.

Hmmm, been really excited for being able to land on atmospheric planets. Not surprised it’s a bit of a state having only just come out today in alpha form

Apparently they want Odyssey to run on the same specs as the original release.

    potato specs!

That's interesting - the original release of what? There are plenty of machines which ran the original release version fine, but couldn't run Horizons due to the shader requirements...

It's an Alpha. To be expected. And in my former job I played a heck of a lot of shonky alphas that became great final releases.

I've decided to wait for the finished Xbox version anyway, as I use that more than my desktop these days.

As it happens I'm playing ED again, on PC this time.

I had thought about getting an asset transfer from my PS4 account but compared to 5 years ago money is so damn easy to make now, and even the engineering grind has been reduced with a variety of crystal shard locations, Dav's Hope, etc etc and material traders.

I reckon I've done about 2 solid days worth and I've got the main ships I like to use (Python and DBX) and the engineering process is well under way with G5 FSD in both, G5 MC and G3 Beams, G3 Drag Drives, G1 PP, G2 PD so far for the python.

Bit annoying that I haven't got Shinrata access again yet but that will come. I'll need to do more exploring to get 5000LY away for access to Palin anyway.

I might drop the DBX for an AspX though - just for that bigger fuel scoop.

I'm enjoying it more on PC - using EDMC and Inara / eddb is far easier than the PS4 manual method!
