This is the 69th solo of the Month (SotM) Challenge.

The challenge is now open and ends at midnight 23rd April 2021.

You can download backing track from Soundcloud below:

https://soundcloud.com/thefretboard/sotm69-2021-04-imalrightjack-determinationerer

Record your solo over the top of it and then submit it (ideally in mp3 format) to solos@theFB.co.uk
Also, feel free to comment on how you approached the solo, which will add a bit more interest and maybe we can learn something from each other.

Discussion:
This backing track was kindly provided by @imalrightjack

Title: Determination

Tempo: about 123 bpm.

Key: I'll let participants decide for themselves.
I might go for Em pentatonic with an added C and an F (i.e. E Phrygian), but I haven't fully decided yet.

The should be headroom to record your solo. Try to set a level without excessive master limiting, because we want to avoid loudness wars.

Voting will start soon after the submission deadline, with each voter selecting their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.
First choice gets 5 points - Second choice gets 3 points - Third choice gets 1 point
The order and scores of the top three entries will be announced soon after the voting ends.

No prizes. It's just for fun.

As people submit their entries, I'll post them below to hopefully promote some discussion on approaches used for the solo:

    It did cross my mind to ask @imalrightjack to include a repeat to extend it a bit. But, although it's quite short, there's scope to shred loads of notes :)

    Hmmmmmm, I'm really wondering how to cope with this one on my archtop  s 3, or maybe something with my fretless uke bass.

    I've just had a go at copying and pasting the main section and it seems to work OK without a glitch. Should I post a longer version, if it's OK with @imalrightjack ;

    I think it would be good to aim for the usual 60s mark.

    I can do just over 50s. I'll just wait for @imalrightjack to confirm he's OK with me messing with his track.

    I was going to say that banging out a 30 second solo is a different kind of skill but i’m good with the two-pass version too*.

    * just gives me twice as much crap to fix in the DAW ;)

    I've just had a go at copying and pasting the main section and it seems to work OK without a glitch. Should I post a longer version, if it's OK with @imalrightjack ;

    Just listened back to updated backing track - i thought when you said repeating the "main section" that you meant the main riff from 2s to 17s not the bridge section, doh. :smiley:  I'll have to rethink what I had in mind.  Determined not to listen to anyone elses until i've thought of something though.

    Sent one in.

    My technique was to start off playing ALL the notes on the fretboard as fast as possible in key, then play ALL the notes on the fretboard as fast as possible out of key, (that sounded even worse), then stumble onto lots of tremolo picking and decide that's my technique for this entry.

    Don't take your pencil off the line.

    I used E something for the 1st part (phrygian perhaps?), then Am pentatonic for the 2nd part.  It was all one take although i added a different FX for the first section compared to the second section.

    @fastonebaz you are now my hero, this is my favourite theory breakdown of a solo ever.  And exactly how I approach all my solos :)

    I'll give this one a go too, right my meine strasse.  Will crack on with something tonight, stress over getting it JUST SO for a few days and then just w*** over it.

    All of 'em sounding good so far!

    Am I the only one who wonders what gear is being used on these challenges? I mean not just the Solo one, but all the others too.

    I tend to note my gear when I get round to entering.  Last month was Kemper (BE-100 profile) and an Eggle 96.

    Good point: this month, I used a PRS DGT DI'd into a UA Apollo Twin interface (bit of overkill as a simple DI).

    The DAW is Studio One (recently moved away from Ableton Live) and I'm running a Neural DSP 'Archetype: Plini' plugin for amp/effects.

    Nothing else other than a bit of DAW eq and comp here and there.
