    @Vibetronic one more (nerdy) question.

    Is the pattern:
    Down, hammer, hammer
    Upstroke, downstroke, upstroke
    Down, hammer, hammer
    Upstroke, downstroke, upstroke
    etc
Which would suit a USX (upstroke escape) approach.

    Or is it:
    Down, hammer, hammer
    Down, up, down
    Down, hammer, hammer
    Down, up, down
    etc
With would suit an economy picking technique (i.e. no escape needed)

The second one. I'd noticed for ages my picking wasn't very good, but sometimes it *did* sound really good, so I had to analyse when it worked....and realised I wasn't picking every note. Then I started to do it consciously and it worked even better. I'm still working on proper alt picking - having lessons - but having my own way of doing it to get my own sound works too. Need to iron out the descending stuff now!!

  • My 2p...

The former gives that 'fake alternate picking' snap (presuming we're talking about a threes/sixes pattern)...although I find that I'm switching between DSX and USX...it's not that critical as the hammer-ons give you time to fumble over to the next string ;)

The latter is kind of redundant (or better: another texture) as the economy approach has no problem traversing strings when it's 3NPS.

    shit, got that wrong. It's...

    Down, hammer, hammer
    Down, up, down,
    UP, hammer, hammer,
    Down, up, down,
    UP, hammer, hammer etc

Sorry! I'd been writing it really carefully too! I wouldn't ever do two downs in quick succession on one string if trying to do something quickly....

Do I recall correctly that you were having lessons with Martin Goulding?

Yes - he's got the picking thing down rather well. And everything else.

Absolutely...I've still got his 'bootcamp' material from ancient Guitar Techniques mags ;)

    ...It's

    Down, hammer, hammer
    Down, up, down,
    UP, hammer, hammer,
    Down, up, down,
    UP, hammer, hammer etc

So that might suggest DSX for the consecutive fast picking sections.

    It's not a competition.

I really couldn't begin to say what notes pick and what I hammer on.  I'm too busy worrying about how cool I look on stage to notice

    1pt @digitalkettle

These stood out in tone or technique or both to me.

I think so....but I've never analysed it in a Troy Grady style :) I just looked at what I was doing, and tried to make it consistent for how I play. There would be parts where it would stutter - which would be where I'd be trying to pick every note without thinking about it. I firmly believe there's no right/wrong way of doing things...with maybe a couple of exceptions (though I'm happy to be proved wrong). I think everyone has their own way of doing stuff, and if it works for them, then that's good. Everyones fingers, muscles and synapses are different.

I spend far too much thinking about all this stuff anyway. I think @fastonebaz 's approach may be the right one  =)

Oooh, gonna have to get this in quick (as the Bishop said to the Netball Team)

    5 Points @Vibetronic - You are Nuno and I claim my £5

3 Points @Bezzer - Great solo especially the part from 0:32 on, jaw on floor time.

1 Point @poopot - Had to include this for it's WappityTah craziness.

Great solos all round, difficult choices.
Only a Fool Would Say That.
