I hope you make a swift recovery Emp, but I think there should be a warning in the thread title, I almost threw up when I saw the picture and gave in to the temptation to read what had happened.
I would guess that most of what you're seeing is just iodine.

Indeed most of it is iodine.  The clinician covered up the blood pool with the dressings as I found out after taking the pic.  There's not much blood there really.
It's the thought of it more than the sight, really.  I have an active imagination.  But thanks for changing the title!

It might be numb for a long time. I did something similar and it took 2 years or more for the feeling to return.

    I bet that smarted a little.  :#

A great lesson to us all to not take shortcuts!

All the best for a quick recovery.

Thank you for all the good wishes.  I am getting a little concerned now as the tip of my finger is pretty numb.  I loosened the dressing in case it was just a bloodflow thing but it made no difference.  I hope I haven't got nerve damage.  That's my right-hand index fingertip - it gets used for most things!

Dont worry .....even if you do have sensory nerve damage it will grow back within 18 months

Actually, it's pretty much right around the upper half of my finger...

The only reason it's just two stitches is that the anaesthetic didn't work very well and after two stitches, I couldn't take the pain any more so he did the rest with paper stitches.

What an odd comment!  The camera perspective actually makes my fingers look shorter in that pic than they really are as well.

Hope you are feeling better today my friend.  I have always worn a pair of safety glasses when drilling anything with a power drill.  Or using any power tool.  As @emp_fab found out, anything can happen with potentially life changing results.

    Ouch!

My sis cut her hand on broken glass when she was younger. She was at a party on a boat on the Thames. They gave her a few stitches but she got no anaesthetic at all!

Looks nasty but I suppose it could have been much worse.

I got paper stitches too which I was kind of surprised about. Maybe just easier. Possibly tidier on the finger tips.

Well, it's a few weeks on and the scar is healing nicely.  The knuckle joint is still a bit swollen and it hurts like hell when I knock it, which I seem to be doing with annoying regularity.  However, I can only bend the second knuckle (the one in the middle) 90 degrees compared to about 120 degrees on my left hand index finger and I cannot bend the first knuckle at all (nearest the fingertip).

I'm hoping this is just temporary and will keep trying to exercise it.
