Transitional Champ black tweed

Hi all,

I'm considering building a modulus 5w tweed champ as my first amp build, to save a bit of cash against buying a Fender 57 Champ. I really love those black transitional 60s cabs (kind of ironic given the amounts paid by owners of the originals to strip off dodgy refinishes back to the tweed colour). Looks like some were tolex and others were just painted.

Luckily the modulus cabs are unfinished, so I was thinking - what would be the best way of achieving that transitional look? I’ve previously used wood varnish to age tweed, which was a bit patchy. I assume the same would work on this - maybe using either black or a nice ebony stain?

Thanks!
