The wear to the lower bout of my 80's strat now finally makes sense.

A pic with a guitarist I admire - although the guitar would have to tick all the boxes as well.

Back in the 90s all the guitarists I was into played Ibanez - Satriani, Vai, Petrucci etc. I really wanted an Ibanez!

I thought this Charvel/Jackson ad was amazing when I saw it 30-something years ago.  But I have never bought a Charvel or Jackson.

That ad just reinforces all my prejudices against guitar brands like Jackson and Charvel.

er ..... so I recognise Steve Vai ..... Vinnie Vincent in the middle?

No clue as to the rest ....

I could probably make out the names at the bottom if I tried but I don't recognise anyone.

Here's another version of the same picture, naming all the names.

For what it's worth, there are two people I couldn't name when I found it this afternoon - but I wouldn't have known who they were at the time, either.  I think I've got albums featuring all the other players in the picture.

The only adverts I remember from magazines are those Blues Saraceno ones with his tartan guitar.
    Maybe tartan's the way forward.

Nope.  But I'm surprised that's as recent as 2003, the world has changed so much!

It's making me wonder what happened to the Guitar World annual Buyer's Guide with pictures of glamour models awkwardly holding guitars and sprawling over amps.  The 2021 edition probably has a scowling Frances McDormand on the cover, to make you feel guilty for being so frivolous.

Judging by the finger positions of the model in the advert, Jackson has the measure of their customers.

The odd thing with the Peavey ad is that, while Dweezil Zappa certainly had signature Peavey amp (the Wiggy), I have no recall of him using their guitars.

Who even sees ads these days? Hardly anyone buys print magazines or newspapers, no-one with a brain watches commercial TV, anyone with half a brain uses an ad-blocker on the computer, and most of us have got very, very good at not seeing or remembering stuff that sneaks through the ad-block. That leaves not much. Outdoor, I suppose, though my response to billboards big enough and obtrusive enough to catch my attention while driving is to curse the barstards who put the thing up and resolve never to buy anything from that mob.

All that said, I do like pictures of the workshop or factory where the guitars are made, and I hate, hate, hate those ridiculous grainy black and white or sepia images of a romanticised workshop from the 1910s for guitars you know perfectly well are turned out in a big modern factory full of CNC machines, or an anonymous sweat-shop somewhere in China.

TLDR: forget the advertising. Just make good guitars. People will find them eventually.

A money off coupon- the kind of thing with dotted lines around it with an image of a pair of scissors.

Add a large finger/ hand with shirt-cuff image pointing to it.
Details of where to post your cheque/postal order - and who it should be payable to - are always helpful as well.
