    What was it?
Could have been a Precision, but probably any normal long-scale bass with a pickup in the same place - quite heavily compressed too. Whatever it was, it wasn't a Dano - My Generation is a definitive example of what they sound like.

The final recorded version of My Generation is a Fender Jazz.  He wanted to use the Longhorn and got through 3 of them during the recording process as he kept breaking strings (and couldn't buy them except for on a new bass).   In the end he ran out so he simplified the part and played it on a Jazz.

"I decided that enough was enough and sold all three Danelectros and the Gretsch to buy a sunburst Jazz bass. The final version of 'My Generation' was played on the Jazz with La Bella tape wound strings."  - https://www.thewho.net/whotabs/gear/bass/bass6466.html

Wow. Didn't know that! It really does sound like a Dano still.

Could well have been a jazz with the neck pickup at a higher volume.

Definitely not a Stingray though. As 99.9% of recorded bass is from those 3 I think we can say it was designed by Leo Fender, and most likely has a Fender logo on it.

I'd really like a return to 90% live instruments.

Perhaps with orchestras on tape purely from a set swapping perspective.
It ain't that kinda show, kid.
    It used to be.
No chance now unless you allow camping!! Putting changeovers and line checks into the show will add at least another couple of hours.

PS is Victoria De Angelis the new fretboard pin up now?

I'm sure the Longhorn sounds good, but it's the ugliest guitar I've ever seen. Singer with winning entry was shouting something like "Rock n Roll will never die!". You're on Eurovision bud.

    Hey hey

I hate to be pedantic like this but the lyric from My My, Hey Hey is actually 'rock and roll is here to stay'.

That lyric is from the electric version Hey Hey, My My.
