It’s music devoid of passion to my ears. I like music to be angry or sad or uplifting or something not just a random collection of notes.

Coltrane: I don't know how to stop (solos)

Miles: Try taking the fucking horn out of your mouth

Is that a true/legendary anecdote, or just a joke?
It's widely reported as a quote.

Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

I watched all the way to the end to see the bit where the crowd applauded... but it never got there.

You know why they called it jazz, don't you?

The word "crap" was already taken, da-bum tish.

I'm no lover of jazz; as with many in here, I don't find the thousand-notes-crammed-into-four-bars thing very musical, although - particularly as I learn more about playing guitar - I can recognise the incredible skills on display.

My main issue is that I find it very frustrating when someone is moving around, over, through and between the tune but never really actually playing it - my brain wants to follow the melody and a lot of jazz doesn't really do that in the way my brain wants it to (I have a similar issue with stand up comedy, oddly enough - when someone starts a joke but then keeps diverting away from it on tangents, I just want them to tell the joke they started, and when they finally do - if they ever get back to it - it's rarely worth the wait). Improvising on a melody is one thing, but when everything is improv, and none of it is the melody, it's not for me.

I'm a jazz fan but I have a real ambivalence about some aspects of it. Noel Gallagher's definition of jazz as 5 guys on a stage having a better time than the audience obviously isn't the whole truth, but there's enough truth in it to make any honest jazz fan wince.

Jazz is a bit like stilton. It grows on you.
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

I love most of types of Jazz, but I have to draw the line at Smooth Jazz. I can just about stomach it when George Benson does it, probably due to the force of his personality and how much I love his playing (and singing.) Honourable mention to Paul Jackson Jr too. But I t’s just too syrupy and errr… smooth!
