Up next on Netflix - Final Destination.
I'm contemplating a Final Destination week, like my Scream week a few months back.  I don't think Netflix have all five of them, but I'll track them down somewhere.
Mr Q, just in case you haven't checked again, Netflix now have 1,2,3 and 5. It seems 6 is coming out next year.
I thought it was just me who couldn't find #4 - anyone know why it isn't available?
Thanks chaps, I have deferred my Final Destination marathon until after FrightFest.  I don't know why FD4 isn't on Netflix, I haven't looked but I was assuming it would be available to rent on Amazon.  It is the worst of the series, so no big loss if it's not available anywhere!
I've been doing the binge - so far my favourite has been the traffic pile up one (2) - then the plane (first) and then the rollercoaster one (3). Started the suspension bridge one  (5) and it's not bad.

I figured part 4 (the racetrack) wasn't on cos it was done by a different studio / rights but nope .. it's all New Line right?

...and no Tony Todd - no final destination. It's the law.
    ...she's got Dickie Davies eyes...

    Doc Sky Arts

An excellent doc following the tragic journey of Syd Barrett from greatness into mental illness and then dependent recluse.

    Recommended.
    Fuck me.  I'm depressed already.
I saw it at the cinema when it first came out (I might even have posted a review here). It was a lot less depressing than @rze99 's review makes it sound. Overall I thought it was a much more positive version of the Syd Barrett story than the usual fanboy nonsense, helped by the fact it was mostly interviews with friends and family.

I'll get a round to buying a 'real' guitar one day.

Yeah, all New Line/Warner Bros as far as I know.  Looks like part 4 can be rented from Amazon for £3.49.   I never understand how licensing arrangements work with the streaming platforms, especially Netflix.  When I did my Scream binge I think it was a combination of Paramount+, Amazon and Netflix.

Closely followed by Jaws. If I remember correctly, the sound of the truck ‘dying’ at the end is the same as the sound they used when Jaws  gets killed and slowly sinks into the abyss.

    Find Me Falling

Bit of a surprise, this one.

It’s a romcom, but it has a bit of substance about it.

Harry Connick Jr is John Allman, an aging rockstar who, after a failed comeback album, buys a shack on a cliff in Cyprus to escape his former life, until the life before fame catches up with him.

I thought it was excellent. Very well done without being over the top and had a decent story.

Probably the best film I’ve seen for a good while.

    On Netflix

We started off last night watching Heart of Stone with Gal Gadot.  Some kind of action movie about a secret agency and some bond-esq mission.

From the outset it was complete bollocks and couldn't watch beyond the 15 minute rule.

I fully accept that films are rarely real life but film makers must think that the movie watching public are thick as frozen treacle to buy even a fraction of the guff that this awful excuse for entertainment threw out in the first 15 minutes!

    Cowboys vs Aliens
Erm, well, it's got what it says. Not as good as I'd hoped, not quite as awful as I'd feared. 5.6 out of 7.2  (note that both are out of ten, the first is how good it was, the second is how good I thought it could have been).

    Men In Black International
Gave up. Lady BMcH made an apt comment; it's like they tried to make a kid's film for grown-ups, and failed on both counts. 1.3 out of 4.7.

Seven Deaths In The Cat's Eye (1973), Shudder.

An Italian giallo gothic horror movie set in the late C19th.  An interesting cast including Jane Birkin, Anton Diffring and Serge Gainsbourg.  But the cast is nowhere near as interesting as the film, which is by any measure barking mad.

Basically this is a murder-mystery whodunnit with supernatural overtones.  In a nutshell, assorted members of a family are holed up in a Scottish castle where they are gradually bumped off one by one.  In each case, a ginger cat watches on intently as the murderer goes about their grim business.

There is a lot about this film that reminds me of some of the Hammer Dracula movies (and indeed there is a vampire element to the film).  Some of the castle sets are strongly reminiscent of those in Dracula: Prince Of Darkness, especially the upstairs corridor from which the bedrooms lead.  There is also a son who is confined to his chambers, much like the Baron in The Brides Of Dracula.

The whole thing has a definite Hammer-ish feel to it, but add a gorilla to the mix - seemingly for no good reason other than there  was a spare gorilla suit lying around on the set - plus a bisexual French teacher and (for me at least) a cliched, laugh-out loud ending and you have a film that is bonkers, stylish and very good fun.

If '70s camp horror whodunnit is your bag, you'll enjoy this.

    8/10.

    Alien Resurrection

    Film4

Hadn't seen this one and wasn't tempted before but had recorded it, so I gave it a go.

The scientists on board the spaceship we join have both captured Aliens and cloned humans and clearly Ripley is one of their Frankenstein creations. A clone of Ripley with added Alien genes make her even tougher and smile like a serpent

Inevitably,  the Aliens manage to escape and so acid blood is splattered everywhere leading to the cliche of a smaller bunch of survivors endeavouring to escape the mass-Alien hoard by running around with flamethrowers and setting the controls to Earth which is only 3 hours away.

Unfortunately, there is not the style, subtle plot, building of tension or surprise of the originals. it romps along delivering lots of action and lots of aliens.  You can have too much of a good thing, and this has too much right from the start leaving the viewer unable to give a toss about anything going on.

Lots of variation of Alien in this from green swimming ones to flying monsters a a gigantic queen and skeletal hybrid with human expressions. Dear oh dear.

I see Weaver co-produced it so she likely just wanted the dosh.

    Not very good

    5/10

    Alien - Romulus (2024)

Pretty good, felt like ''old school'' Alien films at times.

I can agree with the opinions above in relation to very young cast - as much as main character didn't bother me too much, the rest could use with bit more age diverse cast. It's a detail though and didn't affect the overall viewing much for me.

Pretty intense action, feel of Xenomorph lurking in the shadows, ''retro'' sci fi technology used on the ship - I liked all of these.

That sounds a bit like Thundercrack! especially the gorilla suit bit. Although it’s in theory an art film, it’s ummm, very porny so be careful if you do google or indeed watch it. I saw it at a Scala Cinema all nighter donkeys years ago. Once seen, never forgotten.

    ^^ Now there's a challenge :-)

The other thing I omitted to mention about the above is that every time I saw the ginger cat, I thought of Garfield.  Which didn't help with my suspension of disbelief!

I was sitting up late last night half watching TV while restringing and setting up a guitar, and Hitchcok's "Psycho" came on.  It must be about 35 years since I watched the film and I was quite captivated again and put aside the guitar to watch.  The acting was pretty lame, but I think that was part of the allure.  It's not really scary at all, but the secret of his films was the suspense he was able to create from facial expressions, camera panning techniques, sound effects, and so on.  It's remarkable how ahead of the game he was with strange camera angles and loads of other tricks that must have set the film well apart from anything else of the same era that was trying to be a horror or suspense movie.

I thought it was a decent enough Alien movie until the people in the walls started narrating the plot and the alien queen gave birth to that stupid hybrid thing.  That completely ruined the film for me.

But, as I've said before, after Aliens there was no organic direction in which to take subsequent films so everything since has been milking the cash cow for all it's worth.

Even the latest offering from Fede Alvarez didn't do anything new, it was just a rehash of the best bits from the first two movies, although he's done a much better job than anything since Aliens.
