Videoing yourself. scrcpy ftw.

What's Hot
For a while I've been using the weaker front camera of my phone to record my little guitar videos because I can monitor the view on the phone at the same time.  If only i can use the rear higher quality camera.

Lo and behold, after a moments clarity an epiphany emerged.  Screen mirroring to the laptop to monitor what the phone is pointing at. Doh, obvs.

Probably very late to the party but after a quick search and evaluating others, I discovered scrcpy

Works superbly, very lightweight, does exactly what i needed.  Mirrors the phone screen , via usb, with no perceivable latency and i can control the touchscreen of the phone via mouse pointer clicks.

Easy.

So now i can use the higher quality of the rear camera to record videos , seeing all that my phone sees from the comfort of my laptop, controlling it with mouse and connected via usb cable for constant power.  Splendid.  Welcome to 2018.

I assume there must be better software than I was using when I tried it (Windows movie maker or something like that) but when i recorded Webcam with audio interface for sound, the interface was "stereo" and panned hard left/right or summed to mono. If I wanted to record audio in DAW and video separate for processing purposes it was a no go
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

I use my Macbook Pro webcam which gets it's audio from the USB interface. So basically hit record and the audio sounds great so there's no need to load the files in Davinci and line them up anymore.

I've been watching people on Youtube like Tom Bukovac who basically just upload videos direct form their iPhone with no editing and it kind of put me off the glitzy well edited Paul Davids, Pete Thorn type videos. Which is nice cos making unedited videos is a lot quicker and less hassle .... but still get the hits if the content is good enough

I’ve done this without 3rd party software, just using QuickTime. It’s not totally obvious how to do it though and I always have to google how to do it.

Start Quicktime and click file - new  Movie recording.
Select audio source from drop down box next to record button

    That's it, very simple indeed

Even mid-range phones these days have waaaaay better cameras than any webcam. If you're not bothered about depth-of-field, then it's a no-brainer.

For a while, I used an S9 with a smashed screen that I picked up for £25 as a webcam like this, and for recording videos I just used Filmic Pro but controlled it with scrcpy. Worked a charm.

Only thing is, it'll drain the battery pretty hard - and you don't want to be charging at the same time, because it'll overheat.

I just use a mirrorless camera with an HDMI bridge now. The remote control isn't anywhere near as good, but the quality can't be beaten.

Yeah my phone cam is blazin'.  No point buying anything else. I always record and charge at same time and mine seems fine. SG20

I thought Elements was just photoshop stuff - does it do video?

Yep - I use Adobe element 15 video editor for all my YT vids.

My Logitech 920 seems decent enough for the video.

That's something to think about then. Thanks.

    Is it easier than Resolve?

Before lockdown I went on a course organised by the Musicians Union. The advice was “don’t buy a camera, use your phone”. I use epicCam which allows my phone to act as a camera plugged into my laptop.

At my last rehearsal, I set up my phone on a mini tripod then use my Apple Watch to trigger the camera when I wanted to record. It worked pretty well - I could trigger the recording at the start of a song and miss out all the other stuff in between.  Just need to choose a good location for the tripod to stand. I also needed to change a setting on the phone camera app so it opens in the last mode you used rather than always opening in photo mode.

Is that EpocCam? - is the free version good enough?

  • I've been playing with OBS a fair bit and it's taking audio directly from my Helix and it seems to be in sync with the system audio of whatever I'm playing along with.

I expected to have to bin the audio and faff around with a DAW recording and Resolve to line it all up, but it's working very well.

I've got a fast PC so maybe that helps too, but I like it.
