Drums & Cymbals, what pads/dampers work best?

For our family musical get togethers, my BIL plays drums.  What pads/dampers/whatever is best to reduce the drums & cymbals volume while still not interfering with his strike/rhythm?

Rods drop volume without changing the feel too much. What sort of volume do you want to drop to?

silent cymbals are effective, though expensive

I was going to say rods will be the simplest change. Your BIL probably needs to work out which ones will feel most like his usual sticks.

Other option is brushes- video below is us practicing at about 95-100db in the room. Drummer had thick plastic brushes.

I use mesh pads and low volume cymbals for my practice kit.
It is the best compromise.
