I think the photo has to be shared in some way on Google Photos otherwise only you have the rights to view it.

Make a public album with one photo, and then post the link here,  see what happens.

Well that was painful! 

I had to create a Google site add my images from Google photos/drive to the site and then publish the site. Then right click on the image on the site and select "copy image address". Paste it into the image option above and hey presto! Also I did this on my Windows laptop.

So I think it is to do with the Sharing options, just can't work out how from an andriod phone gggggrrrrrrrrrrrr

The images disappearing is a feature, not a bug (from Google's point of view). When going through a Google front end e.g. photos.google.com or a mobile app, they generate direct, *expiring* links on the fly as necessary based on whatever resource and / or product considerations they have, but said direct links aren't guaranteed to be permalinks, I've seen this in the past many times. Google want photos to be shared using their Share feature which creates a new shared album even for one measly photo, and "encourages" viewing via their software rather than a vanilla link.
