Q for ODR-1 (any variation) users : how do you find it as a booster of other things pedal, compared to a TS-type?

The TPS video caught my ears, as it made the TS sound like a back of dicks in comparison (imho, just my opinion etc etc) and I'm currently using a SD-1 (let's call that very TS-type) to boost a Guv'nor and liking it, but the SD-1 one alone on the setting that works as a boost, is a bit meh.

    Anyway, just wondering aloud...

Too fat and smooth as a boost IMO.

  • You could still dial this in on the Nordland, but with the extra knobs it came down to how easy it was on the ODR-1
I found something similar with the Nordland too. I liked it a lot but found that my favourite settings were with the little dials and mid set to how the stock Nobels pedal would have them. The spectrum control is versatile enough on it's own for my purposes - although I'm sure the tweakers out there would like it.

I'm tempted by the mini Nordland without the middle control but I'll likely just pick up an ODR 1BC when finances allow.

I just received a Wampler Belle. Only had a brief play but 1st impressions are that it’s really good, the bass control works as you’d expect and the small size is very convenient.

I prefer a TS. Or better yet an SD1. :D

From what I can remember- I've had mine off my board for a while. The ODR is pretty nice and very versatile, but like a lot of dirt pedals like that, if there's something specific you want it to do, a pedal which does that specific thing, even if it's not as versatile, is usually better...

Also IIRC it sounded a bit grainy for my tastes for a boost... I think it was better as a standalone overdrive.

I’ve never liked any TS pedal, for any application, so I’m not sure if my opinion on comparison is valid.

If you wanted it set to a boost, it’s mostly gonna be a volume or gain boost, as opposed to utilising the spectrum in any significant way. Of course this changes the characteristics of the tone, but not in the same extreme way that a TS type pedal can with its mid boost.

As I say, I don’t get along with extreme mid-type
boosts so I know I could use the ODR-1 to good effect as a boost - smooth and fat even with some slightly exaggerated mids.

I do like an SD-1 as a boost, but much prefer the modded variants with the added bottom end which I guess kinda get me into ODR-1 territory

This is an interesting video to watch:

I like Elmo because he doesn't do slick demos he just buys kit and is very honest about it.
He seemed to quite like it.

  • Received my ODR-1BC in the post this morning (courtesy of @Catthan ) and had a bit of a play.

Initial impression is it sounds quite scooped, mostly in a nice way, sometimes in a sort of weird way. The spectrum control is an odd thing to get your head around, I didn't find any use for it below noon (will keep experimenting) but has a bit of magic around 1 o'clock on the dial, just a bit of a push in some nice frequencies.

Easily a 'mid gain' pedal, really nice and natural compression. I thought the bass cut was well judged and with it engaged it was a much better experience when winding up the gain.

The shock came when comparing it to my Timmy. At first I thought the Timmy had loads less gain but remembered (as I always do, eventually) that the bass control is pre gain so letting a similar amount of bass through to the ODR-1 (Timmy bass control at 9 o'clock) showed they were pretty much evens stevens in that regard. Timmy could cop almost any of the ODR-1 tones with the spectrum knob in its middle 3rd of range and bass cut off, the feel was a bit more gutsy and visceral, with less compression and no fizziness at all. Timmy couldn't keep up with the BC on and gain wound up/spectrum pushed however!

Interested in others' thoughts too please!

Sounds like each of the pedals have found their use? I loved the ODR-1 reissue but it didn't have the bass cut switch and and the low end was simply too overwhelming in a band.

After much consideration I just got a Nordland ODR-C which has extra knobs for mids, bass cut and compression cut. So far it looks like the pedal that addresses all of the ODR-1 shortcomings and then some. Really versatile pedal.

  • I recently picked up a Nordland ODR-C, and absolutely love it. I've been through a lot of pedals looking for the low gain sound in my head - and from the moment I plugged in, I knew that this one hit the spot.

The combination of added lower mid thickness, chime and articulation at the top end, and touch-sensitive response is just magic. Its first outing at rehearsal last night only confirmed how good this pedal is.

Playing my Tele into my Bad Cat Cub (EF86 channel, pretty clean), here are my settings:

    Drive: 1 o'clock
    Spectrum: 1 o'clock
    Mid: 12 o'clock
    ODC: 10 o'clock
    Lo cut: 11 o'clock

@djspecialist , what a coincidence! Last night was the first band outing for my Nordland too. I used it with a Vox AC10 clone and it really sounded like an extension of the amp. It works surpringly well with my Tweed amp too (which is a picky little git).

My settings are almost identical to your, only I used a bit less low cut (9:00 o'clock) and a bit more O.D.C. (12:00 o'clock)... still have to tinker with this though.
