Is the scratching on the back as bad as the photos or was it even just a dodgy reflection?

Very nice. Black 355's are where it's at. The 78/79's are wide necks really notice it on my 347.
How's the weight? the maple neck can add a bit and they seem to use very large centre blocks in that period, though yours will have the cut out for the Varitone choke though the choke adds best part of a pound! Speaking of which, do you like the varitone?
@eschap feels heavy(no issue to me I'm big) , not weighed it but defo much heavier than the 63 335 (as you'd expect with the neck and choke) and the Howard Roberts Fusion. Not had much of a fiddle as yet with the varitone. Btw it's walnut , so your black one still stands alone :-)
They're really powerful sounding guitars, the late 70's ES's, I think it's the extra weight plus the maple neck, like the LP customs of the era.
