How many people buy new?

What's Hot

I had a random discussion this weekend and realised over my guitar buying life, which is probably lean compared to some on the forum. I have never bought a new guitar, not even my first a Squier affinity or whatever the 2005 equivalent was, was new.

So wondered how much of peoples stables were bought new compared to used?

All mine I bought new now.  Gradually sold all my used ones.   I like shiny.

I have bought 3 new electrics, an epiphone les Paul special ii in around 2000 a Harley Benton 335 in 2014 and a squier Jaguar in 2020.

Compared to the electrics I’ve had that is a small proportion. I’ve never regretted buying used I have to say.

Mostly new but a few secondhand when the deal has been right and the piece exceptional.

Bought 4 new guitars in total, a cheap bass when I needed one in a hurry, a Dean evo single cut because it looked OK in the pics (it wasn't) a £35 harley benton folk acoustic (that wasn't either) and a new epi 2020 lp special which most definitely is :)
    so about 3% were new.

I've only ever bought 2 used guitars. My first proper bass, a Rickenbacker 4000, and one of my Telecasters.
    All others bought new.

I try to stick to used but sometimes I have given in to temptation for a new shiny thing. Has to be a good deal though as there’s always one eye on the exit strategy :3

I just tried to count but got bored... I've owned a lot of guitars.  The split of used and new is probably about 50:50 overall, but it was mostly new in the early years and mostly used in recent years.  I think that's due to a shift in the types of guitars I've been interested in buying, I'd still buy new if there was something I wanted.

  • 1975-2005 - 4 all new - all part-exchanged for the next one - only one guitar at a time
    2018-2021 - currently I have 3 new and 8 used - some are keepers

I rarely buy new guitars. One acoustic, and a clearance electric. Same with amps and speakers. I’ve had three generations of Fractal, and only one of them was new. Having said that I’ve just bought a new rack box, but that was because no one here was selling.
    ...  I like shiny.
I avoid shiny, it’s only going to get scratched and dented.

  • All used now. Just don’t get the same value new and I’ve picked up ones that look as good as new anyway. I guess the issue arises with warranties etc with used, but never had an issue myself.

  • I’ve bought a few used over the years, but all the ones I’ve kept (all 3 of ‘em) were bought new.

    It depends what it is.

The Tele I bought new is still worth pretty much what I paid for it SH.

All of mine have been new, probably around 10 or so over the years, including the 3 I have left.

I bought a chapman used once to test the waters though.

I’d also like a Parker at some point, which will have to be used obviously.

I've currently got 14 guitars - the only one I've bought new is my Harley Benton 'Tele' TE52NA.
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)
