Much prefer a café to a pub. And no, not Starbucks, Nero, Pret, Costa et al.

I've got to say I find pubs to be smelly ,dingy places and quite depressing .They fall into different types like the cliquey posh country pub where you are persona non grata if you don't beat for the local shoot or follow the hunt . Or , spit and sawdust hardened boozers for lazy builders who try and escape there at 2pm on a friday rather than do a proper days work.

Then there are the cheap trendy pubs full of kids and noise, the overpriced beardy hipster pub serving some overpriced ,overhoppy Cardommom and Mango scented shit with a silly name and the cableknit cardigan Camra connoisseur real -ale pubs selling beers called 'Old Badger Fart ' or ' Smelly Nigel's Armpit Ale '.

Of them all ,I would choose the real ale pub but you can't drink very much of the stuff anyway .
They are simply outdated compared to the Cafe Nero in the daytime market .
Maybe just me but there seems to be something unwholesome and alki about going into a pub during the day as opposed to  evenings and Sunday lunchtimes
Allll the people, so many people....

When you think about it historically I suppose Pubs , Inns etc have been the location of most brawls, murders, duels ,etc etc
or the saloon type gunfights in Westerns etc
there may well be something in the alcohol connection !

When I was younger I would think nothing of waiting outside a pub in the morning for it to open. When I got a job I couldn’t do daytime drinking so it migrated to evenings. Now I’m old I only do Sunday afternoons and maybe the odd pint between 6 and 8pm after which I’m too tired!

perhaps I should drink more coffee.

...today.  I remember people used to socialise in a pub.

Ok, it doesn't rhyme like that old Beatles classic, but ffs!

I'm doing a mini tour of raceecourses in the south-west and as there was no racing today I decided to venture our for a few beers.

Sat in a pub in Torquay on my own, with just some woman behind the bar for company, I peered out the window, through the wind and howling rain, to the coffee shop opposite.

It was rammed packed! People sat outside in their coats and hats ffs!

We've all gone soft in this country. From beer to coffee. Unbelievable.

Some of my best life memories have been in the pub, not a fcking coffee shop.

This is a rallying call, use it or lose it. Don't go to the coffee shop, go to the pub! Drink coffee there (if you must). Sit in the warm, not outside in the rain with your hat and coat on!

I prefer pubs to coffee shops as you might as well get a proper drink if you’re going to pay 3.50 or more . I never go in coffee shops  I prefer proper back street cafes  where I will have very weak tea as I only like coffee out a jar  and only like to pay about a pound .

I’m in Torquay ,I got soaked on the way home . Starbucks ,Costa ,Nero , etc and all these

  • I usually go to the back street cafe once a week sooner than the pub due to economic reasons . I meet with a few friends  and can socialise for a whole afternoon for a few quid have a few tea’s and toast for a fiver or less  and fulfill my socialist duty for the week

  • Pubs are no use til after 10pm or 11 pm when things start to liven up music ,chicks etc
Daytime just oldies and hardened drinkers

I miss sitting next to a log fire with a southern comfort on a cold winter evening. Or playing cards with my mates and a few pints and having a proper laugh.

My old local was a bit rough round the edges, not really somewhere for a nice meal with the family more farmhands and fortified wine, but it had a great atmosphere. Good tunes in the jukebox too.

All different now though. Gradually became more like a restaurant than a boozer.

I do alright, not quite got the right attributes to take it seriously and make a living out of it, but I know the magic formula!

Unfortunately, the magic formula will only make small but regular profits. To make a living from it (lets say £2k a month) I'd have to invest maybe ten times as much, and I know my nerves wouldnt stand it, and that would affect judgement, and that would affect the magic formula!

Im trying to complete the 66 race tracks of GB. So spent Tuesday at Exeter, today at Newton Abbot, tomorrow at Cheltenham, Sunday at Wincanton, Wednesday at Taunton and Thursday at Ffos Las.

That should leave me with 15 to do I think, so should complete next year.

All small stakes at the moment as the 'magic formula' doesn't involve betting on jump racing!

Currently trying to come up with my own magic formula.
I've always been a numbers guy, betting where the bookie prices are higher than the true odds and the fact it was horse racing didn't really even come in to it as I just saw it as streams of numbers.
Then I decided that to take it to the next level I needed to combine that approach with actual horse racing knowledge. Surely if I can do well just using numbers, then if I can get the numbers and further filter them I can only do better? So I've been learning every day since April and I still feel like I know absolutely nothing haha.

I go to the pub with my mates a few times a month and it’s always rammed. We play in pubs a few times a month and it’s always busy too.

See if you can get hold of three books

    1. Braddocks Complete Guide to  Horse Race Selection and Betting (Peter Braddock)
    2. Value Betting (Mark Coton)
    3. Betting for a Living (Nick Mordin)

With that knowledge behind you and your ability with numbers there should be no stopping you!

Awesome! Perhaps they're not dead and buried after all. Keep going, use it or lose it and all that.

    @DefaultM ;

Great stuff. They're obviously old books but if you're anything like me you will pick them up regularly and like you say, you will always find something new.

To test your skills I suggest you go over to the OLBG website and enter the tipping competitions. For no cost to you whatsoever you can literally win thousands. I have won over a grand myself and that's mediocre compared to what some are hitting.  It gives a good introduction to hone your skills without losing any money.

Just remember they're animals and the better horses are more consistent, whereas the lesser talented can be complete rogues who can be good on their day and can't be arsed on another!

For me, selection of the right kind of race and making sure my brain is right for form studying are the two most crucial factors. That means no distractions and not letting emotions get in the way. If you're distracted or pissed off about something or feeling ill then you will see that your judgments will give you less winners. Obvious when you think about it.

Right kind of race for me means flat racing (because why would you bet seriously on a race where the horse is expected to jump a big fence?) and anything that's not really low class (class 5 or 6) and races over 1m2f over further. With sprints over 5f or 6f they are going so fast that even the slightest error can cost the horse its chances.

Anyway, I'm trying not to hijack my own thread!  But pm me if you need any help or opinion and go and win some cash on OLBG!
