  • I like the blue green as well, pretty cool. Applying multiple coats worked well when I stained my last project, and then I removed excess with a damp cloth (white spirits). You could try this - it leaves more in the deep grain but still only light stain on the hard bits, so you get more colour and contrast without losing shimmeryness.

Your stain might have some white though, so best test.

Well that’s three positives for the blue green - all from respected fretboarders - so I think I’ll give it a bash

    Weekend plan…

    Sanding
    Stain body back blue/green burst
Stain body front blue green burst
    Stain sides green
    Shape headstock
    Stain neck?
    Face headstock - maple veneer?
    Assemble pickups into rings?
    Design pickguard.

I reckon that’s sufficiently ambitious…if I get the first three done I’ll be happy!

Really looking forward to seeing how the burst comes out. Hope it goes well

  • Assemble pickups into rings - the single hardest and most ambitious job of any build.

There must be a better way!

  • Contender for post of the year!
    Interesting - however, task performed.

  • So today’s progress…

    first stain…

    Not convinced by the burst…
but mocked up… (yes I know the neck pickup is the wrong way round)

    More staining I think…
Headstock shaped and machine heads trial fitted…

So do I face (and back) the headstock with maple veneer?

    Resting for a bit!

You won't go wrong with a simple black headstock.

The colours on the best look good.  I just think the blue area needs to be bigger

I am inclined to agree. I’m not sure how thick the veneer is so it’s careful time. I’ll probably go after the stain with wire wool and see how it looks - maybe a bigger overlap?

IMO the blue could be a bit bigger or blended a bit, but thats going to look great!
Id be tempted to plug the spare tuner screw holes, veneer is in all likelihood waffer thin, so go careful….
    Great progress

  • Moving in the right direction?

0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • That's looks much better. Probably no need to sand back, you might be able to just have, say, 4 mixes - blue, 2 part blue 1 part green, 2 part green 1 part blue, green - then blend.

Of course, that's what I would *try* but I'm very much on the side of testing on scrap.

How does it look wet? That'll give you a better idea. I think the colour looks great though!

Nice colour. Don’t forget that the wood will darken as it ages.
