I havn't heard of a single one of them except REM but I've never listened to them.
Not even Pearl Jam or Pixies?

I mean I totally get that not everybody likes the same music but none of the bands in that link are remotely obscure. Mainstream music press efforts, the lot of them. I'm genuinely surprised that anyone on a guitar forum hasn't heard of nearly all of them.
I'd agree and I think probably qualify as Dad Rock as well.
Assuming Dad Rock is the music of the youth of parents of current teenagers the late 80s into the 90s sounds about right. The War on Drugs, for example, according to Wikipedia didn’t form until 2005.
Although maybe dad rock means listening to stuff you’re a bit old for?

Anyway, back to the eels again…

There are a few descriptions that match me but the bands don't correlate. I like more than a few of them though.

Guitar makes us nostalgic for more guitar friendly eras - even if they happened before we were born. I have a closer relationship with Boomer bands as that's when you could play a 25 minute guitar solo if you wanted. You didn't have to be particularly good either :)

I've only ever (knowingly) heard 4 of those bands. I don't actively listen to them.
4 others I recognise the name only.

Yay I win! Not a sad dad.

I've never willingly listened to any of them.

In fact I haven't heard of at least half of them.

Obviously I know who REM are, and they are awful.
I think this means that we (I'm in the same boat) are the Dads of these Dads that this is about

What's the mainstream music press these days?
Does such a thing even exist anymore?
Melody Maker, Sounds and NME have long gone.. .as has Q (and the superb Word) ...so I'm guessing here you mean Uncut and Mojo  ? But if you read those then you're dad rock, right? Guitar mags are not mainstream music press - and they sold out to the "man" decades ago !

It's such a strange list... there are genuinely only 4 bands most would be familiar with - REM, Counting Crows, Pearl Jam and the (at a stretch for non-indie personnel) Pixies.

  • REM and Counting Crows for me. I used to gig quite a few REM songs, not especially a big fan though. Did like Counting Crows first album though.
Not sure what that says about me to be honest.

I agree. Very surprised. Even if you don’t listen to these bands unless you’re heavily/almost exclusively into a more niche music genre, you have done very well to at least not have an awareness of them.

I like R.E.M. but only up until Bill left.

I listen to Pearl Jam but only when they're backing Bernard Shakey.

To me, Death Cab For Cutie is the title of a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.

  • My definition of Sad Dad would be something like the Eagles, Kansas or Chris Rea.

That being said, the War on Drugs fits into category.

Pixies are my favourite all time band.  If you haven’t listened to them do asap. Start with Doolittle as most accessible and then dive in.

My 16 year old daughters favourite band too.

I can’t imagine @fretmeister enjoying Wilco. Maybe My Morning Jakcet in their most guitar/solo-y mood.

Lay Low is a fantastic song

Regrettably, I think is now becoming the Sad Grandad territory.

I like Pearl Jam and Counting Crows. I don't have any children and I don't know a single person called josh - so it's all bollocks.

I dislike all of those acts but am nevertheless a sad dad.

  • I thought I'd gotten away with it until I realised those bands are more up to date than most of what I like.

I must like Sad Grandpa Bands.

  • I guess that I take the Sad Dad title so far. I own albums by nine of the bands listed. Do I care? Not in the slightest.   :)

I've heard of most of them, just don't really like any of them.

    Quite funny and true though.

EDIT  I've been on smack half my life so things are a bit different for me. Still sad and a dad though.
