    My guess, £885

My wife completely destroyed the engine in her Mini Cooper S days before Xmas.  I somehow limped it to the garage on two cylinders.

Needed new timing chain, guides, valves, pistons, valve stems, and a full bottom end rebuild with new bearings.  Head had to be sent away for work.

That was £4K!!! The bulk of which was labour…
only got it back yesterday.  Fab job, but I fear a preventable one.  I’m now trying to teach my wife the concept of ‘mechanical sympathy’

They regassed the air con, which was nice….

Stop posting elsewhere and ease our suspense.  I've bitten my nails away to the quick in nervous anticipation of the winning price ;)

Think I paid >£1k for mine.  I think there were two, and this was the awkward little one underneath the engine, ....

My next one will cost about £2000. But it's a mid-engined car where the engine has to b:anguished:  dropped. :

Sorry for the confusion Bertie.  I was looking for an update comment at the end here rather than back in the opening comment.  Anyway, my guess was closer at £520, but I'm not at all worried about "winning".  It's overrated really, it's the participating that counts

Unless it's a really recent car, it would have been cheaper to find another engine and drop it in.

I think Bertie’s forgotten to post the answer. I’m cutting him some slack ‘cos he’s an old codger, and gets easily confused.

I know. I know. There are good reasons why this didn’t happen.  Have reconciled myself to it.

Cost was £518.40 at my local garage (need to be able to walk home as we're a 1 car household now and the dealer is 10 miles away)

    Winner is @rocktron [535.38]

But Bertie  will probably cut you some slack @chillidoggy ; 'cos he realises you're an old codger.
