So the lure of something else on the fender and vintage spectrum means this is up for grabs for the time being. A 1967 Fender Telecaster known as a smugglers telecaster.

It’s a refin but a good one and very close to the real deal and already showing some nice checking. You can see where the cables were snipped and resoldered for the refin, all very neatly. Also a little resoldering at the switch end.

Other than the refin it’s completely straight.

Neck is a maple cap and stamped May ‘67, medium feel C and hasn’t been refinished. Pots are 17th week of ‘66 which isn’t out of the normal. Weighs around the 8lb mark. Ashtray also still knocking around.

Case is correct for period and in good condition.

The neck pickup is a belter. I picked this up from ATB but as I mentioned, something else has caught my eye.

Viewing welcome. I’m in south west London and may be able to meet around London or maybe even the surrounding counties. Will only ship with the guitar insured for its full value.

£6,500 + shipping. Open to trades of one or more guitars if it helps. NOW £5,999 - SOLD

    OK. I'll ask. Why's is called a smuggler's Telecaster?

The cutout under the pickguard ideal for smuggling. This guitar is lovely. Wish I had the funds for it.

Given the customs charges/import taxes/currency exchange/ courier admin fees?..... I'm guessing it might make more financial sense to smuggle vintage Fenders inside bales of drugs these days? :-)
    Very nice Tele though!

A few trade offers but nothing that has moved forward.

There’s a ‘66 at Moto gone live at £5,999. It’s is a refin but has changed pots, control plate, a changed decal and a Selmar case rather than a Fender case like mine. Dealer guitar with more changes vs private seller with less changes means they probably even out in price.

    So price drop to £5,999

Interesting that one has a rosewood neck and the later 60s logo rather than the transitional one like mine and others I’ve seen.

Maybe it was just a heavy wood issue and they did it for all teles for a time?

I'm not sure but I think they worked out pretty quickly that it didn't make much impact on the weight loss!

Yea they had an inability to source lightweight ash so they used a heavier type of ash and routed it out to make it lighter. Not all 67 Teles were Smugglers Teles. You'd need to take the guard off to check as some had the regular routing.
