As for "when am I ready?"  You'll never be ready.  It works in reverse, you become ready by doing it.  - pmbomb

    Sad news. Awesome name!
    RIP
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Bless him. It broke my heart when the hunters killed his mother.

Seriously though, a great mind and always seemed like a proper civilised gentleman. RIP Bamber.

I still watch University Challenge - Not sure when I first watched it on a regular basis, but certainly remember Bamber - It was one of those names you never forgot - Not sure if I've ever heard of another Bamber

87 - Looks like he had a good innings - So a starter for 10 and RIP to BG

Forgot Uni Challenge was originally on ITV during Bamber's days - You just assume it is/was a BBC show - But never knew it came from a USA show called College Bowl

Having been chucked out of the audition/trial for UC* when I was at university I am nonetheless sad at this.

*I may have looked like I was drunk but...

I watched that programme all the time with my mum before I left home, he was such a nice man and seemed very intellectual to me.

I think this sums him up well:

Peter Gwyn, executive producer of University Challenge - "Bamber was unlike anyone else on television when the programme started back in 1962 - he was utterly charming, erudite and, at times, seemingly omniscient, and his 25 years spent presenting the programme established it firmly as the institution it is now. He was a unique presence in British broadcasting and he'll be very sadly missed."

Loved watching University Challenge as a child, and Bamber Gascoigne was a great host. The obits on various sites have mentioned the phrases he introduced that became inseparably associated with the show - "here's your starter for ten", "no conferring" etc. One of my favourites was "very well interrupted".

R.I.P to an iconic figure of British tv in the 20th century.

Ah, another one gone. Really fond memories of UC.
    I'd forgotten "no conferring."
I'll see if I can get in a slightly sarcastic, "very well interrupted" for when a particular person I work with cuts across me yet again...
    RIP Bamber Gascoigne

  • He made great panes to let people know he liked the questions so much he took them home and studied around the subject each week.

So it wasn't that he knew everything but that he loved learning.

It's not a shame that he's gone (for us), it's a shame there aren't more role models like him in the public eye.

I still half expect the “and here is your host, Bamber Gascogne” at the beginning of the show, it was so ingrained in me. He seemed much more human and and less up himself than Mr Superior Paxo. The old theme tune arrangement with the tubular bells was better too.

    RIP Bamber.

got to say, he's not looking so good these days, almost looks like the start of parkinsons tremors
just because you don't, doesn't mean you can't

That's exactly what it is, @bertie - he went public with it late last year, via his column in the Saga magazine.

Was going to post the same thing. You can tell he’s on anti-tremor meds, he hardly blinks and has lost a lot of the expression in his face, same as Billy Connolly.

I feel enough time has passed for me to recall a joke from school:

What's got an IQ of 150 and green pubic hair?

    Bamber Grass-groin.

    RIP, Mr G
