ADVICE SOUGHT: Mix feedback!

Hi Guys,

I've been working on a project rooted in hardcore punk over the past 10 months and we finally got some recordings done. I'm an amateur mix-engineer but have some experience from various home projects, so I took on the role in the true spirit of DIY!

Drums recorded completely live (no-click) in our hideously-treated practice room (3x mics: kick, snare, over toms), everything else done at home individually. Bass DI, guitar line-out from Orange amp, vox through Samson USB mic.

Everything into GarageBand and mixed in the box using stock plugins.

Four songs in under 8 minutes... please let me have it with your feedback!!!

Thank-you guys :)

  • OK, I've only listened to a few seconds of a handful of songs, but the initial impression is that the vocals need to come up in the mix a lot.

As for "when am I ready?"  You'll never be ready.  It works in reverse, you become ready by doing it.  - pmbomb

  • @Jonathangus - thanks for the observation. I am intentionally trying to keep the vocals low, but I feared they may have been too low! I'll bring them up a couple of dB and see :+1:

My first immersion tis similar....vocal not cutting through the mix, I also found the drums a bit central, Id like to hear a bit more stereo spread, the whole mix could use a little polish...but hey...its done and here so great job ;-)

  • Appreciate the feedback @spark240. I think I’m trapped stylistically between the 90s panned guitars and 80s mono style and need to commit to one or the other. I imagine the former would be the more interesting approach

It’s always worth posting a link to stems, a few folks here will do a mix for you then you can see how others would approach it .

@spark240 - - - I took your advice and pumped the vocals up a touch, plus I added a stereo-widener on the toms/OH to give a bit more movement, yet still in keeping with the old school vibe. Definitely polished it up a bit, so thanks for your keen ear and helpful advice. Pretty happy with it overall given it's my first attempt mixing live drums... aside from on an old Tascam as a teenager!
