I'll leave you to figure out which occurred first.

On another note...have you ever seen that happen to a drill bit? I haven't. Well, until today.

    Wow.
Drill bits should be high strength but brittle steel. That’s either a cheap low quality steel or it’s been heated so much it’s annealed itself (which is unlikely)
    Karma......

  • Ouchy indeed. I've snapped many drill bits, but never bent one like that!

It's a cheap bit, but it also got hot enough that it almost burned a hole through the carpet after that incident.

    Cheap drills.
I've also seen them unwind the helix.
Work never bought from that supplier again.

The only drills I bother using are Presto, Dormer or Guhring.

Did it go all the way through your thumb?
I used to work in a precision engineering company and was standing beside one of the fitters when he drilled almost all the way through his thumb with the pillar drill press and the drill bit snapped off at the entrance hole.  He blacked out with the shock and sudden pain and later needed surgery to remove the broken piece of drill.

So, what were you doing when the mishap occurred?  Drilling holes in a metal computer cabinet and the bit snagged?

Nah, just surface damage as the bit bent and swiped past - the injury is far less impressive than the weirdness of what happened to the bit.

I was drilling out the mounting hole in a Lace Sensor. Those baseplates are thick! Didn't use a vice because I didn't want to damage the plastic, and didn't use the drill press because...well, I couldn't be arsed getting it out of the shed.

    Lesson learned.

Wow, you were unlucky but lucky too, that could have been much more nasty.
I wonder, did you buy the bits as being for drilling brass?
Looks like the order was fulfilled as drill bits made of brass...
