He certainly had a few key roles which will be remembered for a very long time.  I haven't read all the reports the last couple of days so I don't know what health issues he may have had, but he seemed to have aged a lot in recent years.

He was terrific in Goodfellas  but my favourite role he played was as Shoeless Joe Jackson in Field Of Dreams. He was incredibly versatile but was sadly typecast as a baddie in many films which was a huge disservice to his talents.
