Why Should I get Utra Fast Broadband

What's Hot

City Fibre have just been down my road and it looks like I can get 300mb broadband for the price I was paying for my current 60mb.

For a bit more I can get 900mb.

The thing I'm struggling with is what benefit I will get from this?

I can already stream multiple VOD channels without any hiccups and I don't torrent.

Anything I'm missing other than showing of screen grabs of broadband speed test?

    Bragging rights?
Or if you are @digitalscream better hosting possibilities?

Stability is more useful than pure speed (once you get above the useable minimum).

What’s the new provider’s resilience and SLA like for fixing any issues?  What experience have you had of the existing provider?
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

It would be the same provider (Zen) who are excellent.

You know the fretboard doesn't run from Lee's bedroom right?

If it did an Akita would probably have eaten the hard drive by now.

gigaclear have recently dug up our street and promise at least 300 up and down but the online reviews aren't great.

Good when it works, but unreliable. I've got 60 down and 30up at the moment and it's rock solid stable. That's more important for me.

If CityFibre are as good as their contractors that have just been butchering our local streets, leaving rubbish behind in every street and severing other providers' connections in the process, I'll steer clear I think.

She's actually surprisingly considerate. Last time she destroyed that room, she chewed all of the wife's designer shoe boxes into confetti, but only left a single tooth mark on a single shoe.

was considering running tFB from one of my servers here at home, but decided against it after a couple of power cuts. Still, I've got near-gigabit broadband here, and it's bloody good - I've never had less than 800Mbit/s, and streaming 4k video to multiple devices simultaneously is a breeze. It also helps enormously with large downloads, obviously, and if you're a gamer...2ms ping is realistic.

If you download lots of large files (videos, software updates, etc) for any reason, that’ll be quicker.

I'd love to have the option. I live in a small town (population c5000), I have the FTTC version - the cable run to cabinet is around 600 metres. I get 50meg down (that's fine) but only 6 up (that's shit). The cable infrastructure in my estate is sub surface and was poorly installed "back in the day".
Earlier this year a local alternative provider (Trooli) started advertising FTTP from 600 - 900 Meg download. I needn't have got excited, they decided not to serve my estate of 38 houses due to poor state of the subsurface ducting (Openreach told them it was shit).
Openreach themselves are planning to roll out FTTP within 3 years...but they've told me that my street isn't on the list....
I suspect there's 1000s like me who'll miss out on the investment whilst a myriad of providers run in cables to serve the same potential customer base...

I have to upload large files for work sometimes so I got the fastest down speed to get the fastest up speed. It's asymmetrical. I wfh 100% of the time so it makes sense to get whatever is the fastest/best

Luxury! I’m in rural N.I. Last month I finally upgraded from 10 down / 1 up to Fibre. 60d is great but the 30u has been the real revelation. Jolly expensive though.

    100%.

Gigaclear is in our village and performance is patchy.
    Support isn’t great.
We stayed on Zen which is 250down and 30 up but it almost never drops, support is brilliant.

Gigaclear customer here for about 4.5 years.  500 up and down, it's been rock solid.

I've never needed support other than to increase my bandwidth which was a lot more hassle that it should have been considering I wanted to give them more money.

I have to do alot of uploading of video files and also video calls for work so a good upload speed is essential, I'm on the M200 package with VM that gives me 20mpbs upload which is great. But the service is a bit unreliable sometimes with packet loss issues in the area. Currently paying £44 per month which isn't bad and can't find anything similar or better for that price currently.

Could probably move to another provider for lower download speed (M200 is 200mpbs) as I don't need it that fast (its good though). Zen are supposed to be good and reliable but the best they do is 32 mpbs download and 16 upload I think. I would like the buffer of a bit more as other people in the house use the internet too.

I have 2.8 (down) and our road is scheduled to get 'high speed internet' sometime between July and December 2024.

The speed we have works for forums, Google, YouTube videos etc but nothing much else.

Most broadband providers use Openreach. The only large  scale alternative network has been Virgin media . I thought  Openreach  were incompetent and arrogant . I have switched to Virgin  who are just arrogant.  City Fibre is the first real alternative network provider to provide a better network the the other two . Sadly, none of the broadband  providers offer a land line in  the packages when you  switch  to using City Fibre   , so I will say with virgin.

We did it the other way - with proper fibre, there was no need for a landline, so we cancelled it and so we've actually saved money.
