I made one from an acoustic bass with a pool cue as the stand, lots of fun.

Have a wow @Zoonyboy ;cos it's a rare old beast. Was it tuned in 5ths like a normal upright bass?

A normal upright bass is tuned in fourths, like a guitar, not in fifths like a violin, because of the scale length.

Cool, I'd always assumed it was 5ths cos of violin tuning. You learn something new every day.  :)

  • I tuned it in fourths. The fingerboard was shot so a new one was fitted in a fretless style. Used on a couple of recordings, and gifted it away some years ago when I moved house....Around 10 years ago I bought a Gibson Mando Bass from the Bass Centre to kind of replace it. It's over 100 years old now. Fretted. It isn't very loud either, but it looks fantastic and plays nice. Nice tone. Huge widths of spruce for the top. It has a retractible spike so you can play it standing up, or sitting down on a chair with it next to you. Google it! Bonkers.

At risk of sounding a bit of a dinosaur, there's definitely something about a lady bass player.

I just bought an undersized bass guitar... a Tanglewood TWR BE, a little bass-uke-sized thing with rubber strings.

A bit of a toy really - except it's not! I took it to a jam with a friend yesterday, and although its inherent tone and volume aren't great played acoustically, if you run it through some effects and a 450W Ampeg, it's absolutely HUGE sounding D.

At one point I was using octaver, fuzz, chorus and controlling the feedback with the volume pedal all on my Boss GT-1B. The whole lot, including cables and power supply, fits in a Taylor Baby gig bag I got with it (but obviously not the amp!).

Surprisingly easy to play given that it's fretless and the positions are very close together too - I expected intonation to be an issue, but it isn't really until you get up to the body joint area. At least, after I cut the nut properly it isn't...
