I start another car thread ?

I’m definitely going to move on from the Civic this time, and I’m a lot less fussy now.

All I want is 1) The best ride over bumps 2) 45mpg+, 3) A DSG box 4) A nice interior.  It would be nice if it also didn’t look like a bag of shit.

Feel free to ignore this thread if you’re sick of my car threads  :3

Non VRS (for the ride) Octavia diesel.

Our VRS one averages 40+ mpg around Sheffield which is a crap town for consumption.

Should we run a sweepstake on when Emp actually buys the new car.  I think I want sometime in 2027.

My Subaru Forester diesel gives me 48-50 mpg loads of room and goes almost anywhere and is fun to drive with an exceptional turn of speed. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Dont know what a dsg gearbox is

Be selling a lot more AJAX's soon... very low mileage, no previous owners, must have own ear defenders.

    Do you have a budget?

I know I keep mentioning it but Citreon makes some cars that have a great ride quality.

The "nice if it doesn't look like a bag of shit" comment is somewhat open to interpretation.  I happen to think that the civic doesn't look that great.

Actually a great suggestion and a great vehicle .......certainly not a contender for a beauty competition but there is a certain brutish elegance in it's purposefulness and rugged appearance.
No DSG options here but if Emp expects to get a car with a good performing DSG system without spending a lot of money then he will be disappointed .......even Porsche / VAG Audi didn't get it right until 2012 onwards in their high end vehicles.

Foresters are as ugly as a hat full or arseholes people's bottoms. I should know, I've done 500,000 kilometres in Foresters and plan to do plenty more. The SG Forester (manufactured 2003-2007) is destined to be an all-time classic. The newer models are tarted-up with more bling, even uglier, not really as bulletproof-practical, but still great cars. I'm sticking with the SG, not least because I flat refuse to buy a car than doesn't have good all-round visibility - and that crosses out practically every car currently in production. (The world has gone bloody mad.)

Foresters are tough. I've taken mine - first the red one, now the newer green one - all over the outback, on-road and off, it's just dealt with every challenge thrown at it. Awesomely good car.

    BUT:

    (1) it doesn't get anything like 45mpg. Try 30-odd.
    (2) That's the standard petrol version of the legendary Subaru boxer. Later on they made a diesel version out of it but that was not a success. Forester and Outback people say it has reliability issues - not horrendous like some cars, it's still a Subaru after all - and isn't a patch on the always-excellent petrol flat 4. Subaru themselves seem to agree - all the latest model Outbacks and Foresters are petrol-only.

DSG and 45mpg is doable with a 1.4 TSI as well as diesel. I'd go 1.4 TSI Octavia Estate for VFM if it was me.

I had a 1.6 TDI Bluemotion Golf that would do a genuine 75mpg+ on my extra urban commute. Only the EGR and DPF stuff stopped me getting another diesel..

And the mk8 is garbage in comparison

We have 2007-08 Forester 2ltr petrol with 300,000 km currently having a full service and new timing belt and parts fitted. 7000km over the change limit but never stopped running. To be fair it has never actually let us down. And it is used for bee keeping in narrow forest "tracks" and offroad.

We are not mechanically sympathetic to it either. Drinks petrol like a champ so not if you are after mpg certainly, but minimal gubbins in the engine, no turbo and mechanical/manual gerbox and dual range. I would say because of its usage it is "tatty" but just keeps going. In the UK I am sure it would have been scrapped by now................

In general, I would stick with the Honda, as a normal car you probably aren't going to get much better. Having said that my car is a 2008 Accord estate diesal that whilst mechanically sound at 410,000km the way the previous owner abused it is catching up. Somehow will need to change it soon, though 2 years now on the "MOT" so could get away with it for a bit.

DSG gearboxes have an awful reputation for failing at 3 years old plus. But I don't like automatics anyway, stick to something simple and standard.

DO not buy a Ford with the 1ltr Ecoboost.

  • Seriously what you want is to get yourself down to Berry Brook, and see what they have that takes your fancy, every car they sell is capable of getting tens of thousands of miles per gallon, though they are not the fastest of cars, but on the plus side are dirt cheap to insure and any idiot can repair them with the nost basic of tools without having to watch hours of YouTube videos or buying a Haynes manual for it, so it will easily out last you and any grand children you may have.

Cheers @Jetsam1 The change interval for the timing belt is flexible. In metric markets Subaru say to change it ever 100,000 kilometres, but in the massive US market, where the punters wouldn't recognise a kilometre if it jumped up and bit them on the ankle, Subaru recommend a new belt every 75,000 miles (120,000 kilometres). So don't beat yourself up if you are a bit over 100,000, you'll be fine. (On the other hand, do not under any circumstances neglect it completely as you'll end up with broken valves and a not-worth-repairing motor car.)

I bought my first one new in 2004 and happily did well over 350,000k in it before an extended family member put her same-but-newer one with a third the mileage up for sale. She was planning to buy something cheaper for the odd times she actually needed a car now that she was home with youngsters instead of working. So we swapped with cash her way. Perfect solution! My old red one went for a good while longer before she bought something new and flash. Meanwhile, I've put a zillion more miles on the  green one. I'll be doing the timing belt on the next service (210,000k) and plan to do at least another 100,000k. Mrs Tannin has a new Outback with all the trimmings and it's rather posh, but I prefer driving the old green bus. All else aside, it's modified with raised suspension for bad tracks and a second battery, underfloor storage, various other useful things. Tough as old boots, goes anywhere. Far more practical in the outback than an Outback!
