A new metric to track

Just been looking on Google.

For the search term "thefretboard" or "the fretboard" we are now the top hit.
For "fretboard" we are on page 4. It will be very interesting to see how this changes.
For "guitar forum" we are absolutely nowhere.

BTW if you want to look at this make sure you do it from an incognito window or google will promote things you often look at (like this site).

  • Wow...that's a bit of a leap. It must be based on activity, then, because it's not like we've done a lot of SEO (or any, as far as I can tell).

While "the fretboard" isn't as big a search term as "guitar forum", it's still pretty impressive.

Had a quick look at the code .. consider changing the <TITLE> tag and adding a <DESCRIPTION> tag underneath.

<title>The Fretboard guitar forum for musicians around the world</title>
<meta name="description" content="An online forum for guitarists, bass players and musicians" />

The <TITLE> tag is important for SEO the <DESCRIPTION> tag is what Google uses when describing the site. At the moment it shows the 'howdy stranger ...." message. Something more meaningful ... perhaps. And use <ALT> tags on the image header.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

  • Do we even use the words "guitar forum" anywhere?
It might be worth looking into adding some important keywords in the title of the pages, the title attribute of links, etc etc...

  • Also include "uk" - since a lot of the focus here is on UK builders etc.

Just updated the site description on the dashboard though as far as I can see it's not making it into the page.

  • Unless there's a plugin for it we might have to hack some files to include "Guitar Forum - " (or something to that effect) in all the page titles and descriptions.

  • It might also be worth modifying the home page to add a paragraph describing the site, including a few chosen keywords.
