Samsung TV help (as the user guide is beyond stupid)

I've got a Samsung UE43AU7100KXXU TV (yeah, snappy model name!).

It came with TWO different remotes (!?)

The menu system is almost like it's been designed to confuse the shit out of even the tech-savvy.  The 'e-guide' accessible through 56 button presses appears to cover every model in the Samsung range with uber-lazy caveats peppered throughout of "may not apply depending on model or region".

This is the manual built into the TVs software...  So they couldn't be bothered to specify which functions work and which don't on the actual TV you're reading it on.

The TV doesn't have any internal storage (that I've been able to establish anyway) and the "e-guide" says that recording and 'time-shifting' of TV broadcasts is possible if you attach an external USB drive.  Although it does state that "it is recommended to use the USB hard disk that supports USB 2.0 or later and 5,400 rpm or higher.  However RAID-type USB hard drives are not supported.  USB memory sticks are not supported."

I've attached a 1TB USB 3.0 SSD and I can't even see if it's detected it anywhere.  The manual is so bad, I don't even know where to look (I've already exhausted my logic and abandoned it as Samsung seem to be incapable of having any logical system at all)

Does anyone know if my model is even capable of recording / pausing live TV?

  • Have you plugged the SSd into the correct USB port? My last TV could record onto USB sticks, but they had to formatted a certain way (Linux could read the file system but not Windoze)

The remotes are a bit wank. I have aoad from work and at first glance they're pretty much the same, but then you notice that random buttons are different.

Easiest way to tell if you have recording is to press the pause button on the remote, which is usually in the bottom row. The recording is a bit rubbish compared to a set-top box though.

It probably comes with two remotes because one is programmable and one is not.
At least that is how previous Samsung TV’s have been for me.
    Weird thing to moan about.

lot of blurb on tinterweb says you should use an externally powered USB drive
just because you don't, doesn't mean you can't

But it's an SSD!  It takes nothing (almost).  I'm assuming the 'external power only' thing is because their USB ports can't supply enough juice to spin a mechanical drive.

The first issue really is that I can't see if the TV has even recognised there's a drive connected to it.  I've been through all the menus I can find and... nothing!

My LG can pause/record but only with an attached drive. I bought one of these and it works flawlessly, only real world issue is that the TV only has one tuner so you can't record one channel and watch another so in reality we only use it for pausing/rewinding (which is still thoroughly worth having) and use the Humax PVR for scheduled/multi-channel recordings.

I just had the brilliant idea of asking Samsung.  Their support agent said my TV doesn't support it.  Oh well !

I had an SSD in a case on my Samsung and it worked. Then I realised it'd be more useful as network storage.
