    Happy Sunday guys!

So I'm thinking about getting a tonex pedal as not 100% happy with PodGo amps and after playing with the free software they do sound better. However the whole amp captures thing is confusing me slightly so I'm hoping someone can clarify. My understanding of the captures is that they are quite simply that - a capture of an amp setup with all the amp knobs set up in a certain way. So my confusion comes when editing the gain, treble etc on the app. Surely this won't do much if the whole point of capture is that the amp is setup for a certain sound ?

As has already been said you do get tone and gain controls.

The thing is to start with a capture that is close to what you want.

When you buy commercial captures you generally get many of the same amp.

I can only speak for amalgam but for example I bought their jcm 800 pack and there was about 30 captures through different cabs at different settings.

I wonder if they'll add a pitch shifter like the Nano Cortex? That would be mega handy for me.

If you watch the latest video on the IK YouTube channel, the Amplitube update, there’s a new feature to open Tonex from within the app. When Tonex opens, there’s delay and modulation in the signal chain toolbar.

Good spot, that's an interesting addition. I'm not going to complain at being given free stuff, but I do hope in time I learn how to better twiddle with the non-amp stuff as currently it's a pain on the pedal and guesswork/trial and error at best on the app to use on the pedal.

The reverbs are a small selection from their X Series pedal I believe, so would assume the same again - there isn't a pitch shifter on the modulation one though, apart from the usual chorus type effects

But how does it integrate in the pedal? The fixed knobs on the pedal only have controls for Rev/Comp/Noise gate. Or is it just a software addition?

Possibly shift what the Alt function does with a double tap somewhere. I dunno, I dont work for IK. :-)

  • Sounds very promising. IK typically upsell add-ons, but if they do this as a free update then it’ll sway a lot of towards ToneX instead of Kemper Player and Nano Cortex.

I’ve still got my ToneX rig as well as the ToneX one. Would be super cool if they can make it work in the small version too.

Has anyone bought the IK MESA/Boogie Reference Signature collection?
I'm currently using a couple of the free Amalgam Mesa captures but want a better hi-gain Rectifier tone so I either buy a couple of Amalgam amps or get the official IK MESA pack.
If anyone has tried both then even better.

Yes I’ve got it and I’ve got the Mesa Mk3 and Mk5 packs from Amalgam. I would say quality wise they are on par, with the Mesa pack being voiced slightly darker. That’s comparing them to the Amalgam Balanced captures. I would say the amalgam packs are more versatile due to the fact Karlis provides various EQ options (Bright, Balanced, Dark, Warm etc). You don’t really get that with the Mesa pack.

This FREE update makes TONEX Pedal and TONEX ONE a complete all-in-one solution for the gigging musician requiring a powerful compact ampless rig. It features 8 new effects, including 2 delays, chorus, flanger, tremolo, phaser and rotary (all tap-tempo), plus a new spring reverb.

Two new effects blocks can be configured pre- or post-amp and cab for maximum customization. The 8 effects are also compatible with TONEX Mac/PC. The software and firmware updates will be available in November 2024.

    That's great info, thank you.
I keep seeing the Mesa pack advertised on Facebook especially the Clean Anybody? and Animal's Nickel presets which sound really good to me.
I like the Amalgam approach though and they have a 3 for 2 and a 5 for 4 offer on just now.
    This could go either way!

That is really interesting and if the effects can be toggled on and off by midi then it just might make my HX-FX redundant.

This is great - I sold my Tonex One on eBay last week because I got a Nano Cortex. The buyer lied (or was incompetent) and said it was faulty. I’ve just got it back and tested it and of course it works fine, then this is announced! Ha. Well worth keeping and trying the effects out I think.

  • My ToneX is probably the best piece of gear that I’ve bought in years. Glad to see that IK are adding the modulation effects for free.

They just need their UI design team to be skinned alive, then covered in jam, and then let the termites at them. All while being forced to listen to Coldplay.

Just for some constructive Continual Professional Development.

Between this and the as yet unnamed Fractal unit, it does point to 2025 being the year of the MIDI controller.
