Any of the big 3 Leo Fender designed basses.

Because all guitarists sound crap without it, no matter what guitar they are playing.
    OK - Precision, Jazz... Stingray?

I wouldn't want any of the "big 5" electric guitars in unmodded form as my number 1.
    What are the "big 5"?
Les Paul, SG, 335, Strat, Tele. I’ve seen them called that a few times and assumed it was a well-known thing but maybe it’s not in which case my apologies - I wasn’t trying to be obscure.
It could well be a well-known thing, but it's not something I'd heard of.  I thought Strat, Tele, Les Paul.... and then I was in the land of personal preference.  I even wondered if there might be a Rickenbacker or Gretsch in there, because they're old and distinctive.

I suspect it's a bit like that "Big 5" African safari where you go  "Lion, Elephant, Rhino...... errrr, Giraffe?..... Hippo?..... Tiger?"
    (definitely not Tiger).

    My Tele.
Or my PRS SE DGT. But that's only my current favourite as it's new. I'll be back to the Tele soon enough.

The electrical guitar is a fad. I can't see it lasting long.

The best guitar ever is the Les Paul. Prettiest, never too strident, as comfy in a jazz club as it is at a metal festival.

However, I will concede that the same can be said of the Tele, aside from the prettiness and it's always strident. To add to Ash's Vardis point, I present Gojira playing stock Teles - no humbuckers here!

Ok fair enough you guys have good points there :) I also forgot about the many noise rock bands I love who play teles. I still prefer how Gibsons play and sound in my hands though so it's still a P90 loaded Gibson for me!

I agree, a couple of millenium at most!  :)
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

  • I think my profile picture might be a bit of a giveaway... no biase at all eh?  ;)
I can only agree, I love my teles, simpicity, versatility, playability, realiability, and that SOUND!!!
live they cut the mustard for me - and anyway Keith plays one! it must be the best =)
But... may I refine the definition. The one pictured in my profile is a Fender swamp ash tele made in Korea, with Seymour Duncan pups and birdseye maple neck. It's unlike like my other USA and or Mex teles it's just.. I dont know.. amazing.
If you can find one, worth whatever the price (no I'm not selling) ;)

    @Philly_Q ...Leopard, Buffalo.

But Leopards don't exist. Or at least they may as well not exist because you'll never fucking see one even when you've spent a fortune on getting to the middle of nowhere in Kenya in a Land Cruiser and even bought yourself a really nice lens so you don't waste the opportunity and you're sure you saw a tail in that bit of brush but you can't see shit now even though you've been driving in slow circles for 90 minutes. TBH I kinda respect that...

(and what's *really* ironic is even after going twice I thought the last one was Cheetah because buffalo aren't rare but apparently no!)

  • This is the best and only tele I'll have

    That's an interesting 'Frankenstein' design.
It's better and more versatile than a carved top LP, it gets good tele and LP tones but step on a dirt pedal and it sounds like a great paf in the bridge.

After this I never picked up a normal LP.

Yep the P90 neck pup is an excellent combo with the SC Bridge. Its a tele alright

But if I had to sit on a desert island for 6 months I'd probably take a Tele

For six months on a desert island I rather have a good acoustic.
    Martin, Taylor, Gibson, doesn't matter.

    Yes.

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

Tele. It's the ultimate pub rock guitar imo. I know I'll get slated for saying this (again!) but how did they get it so right so early on?

I knew... which to say I didn't know, but my last few "guesses" were intentionally wrong.  The leopard's an odd one, in the broadest possible way it just seems like a smaller lion, with spots.  And I'd never have guessed the buffalo.
