There’ll always be bragging rights and cachet associated with owning “the original and genuine” and people who’ll jump through hoops and write big cheques for the privilege so they’d be pocketing the license fees and still selling the “real” ones, availability of which is still limited and which will only exist in limited numbers due to (un)availabity of Magic Diodes and/or unobtainium transistors…
I only got on the list for fun, but after 6 years I might as well have it when I reach the top.

Demon fx vs the original, both about three years old.
I’d say when into a clean amp the clone is actually more ‘transparent’, as it doesn’t quite have the mid hump the original does, so can actually sound better/more open.
But I prefer the original going into a driven amp(or pedal) because the mid hump works great in this situation…as in the Tube screamer.
I was using my Boss LS2 with the LED covered so as to be unaware of which pedal I was playing at the time.
I felt the original slightly more inspiring to play, but there wasn’t much in it after I’d tried to dial them in to their best setting.
The clone also had more treble…which I didn’t want, I just had to dial it back more…this is after I had wound the internal trim pots back.
I also bought another Demon fx clone recently, but it wasn’t as good as my three year old one.
So to summarise, I would favour the clone into a clean amp and the original into a driven amp/pedal.
