Many years ago, a friend of mine fell asleep in a comfortable armchair at a similar party in his house. We warmed up a pie, nothing super hot, and placed it on his lap. 

A few horus, we checked up on him. It was like john Hurt had fallen asleep there, had some convulsions, and a pie had exploded out of his chest. Pastry and gravy all over him where he'd been slapping this pie in a drunken state but without waking up. 

Was at another similar party waaaay back in the day.
One of the lads who was thought to be more responsible than the rest of the reprobates, was put in charge of ensuring that no-one ate all the food too early.
He was known for decades thereafter as "The Watcher of the Pies".  RIP John, bonny lad
