You can buy all the property you like for friends and relatives, but if they can't keep up with the council tax, the State will auction the house.  It is the State's way of ensuring only the deserving rich are afforded luxuries and the plebs are kept in their place.

I can't feel sorry for people who blow a shedload of dosh quite frankly.

The banks? Fuck them.

The UK bankruptcy process is slow and makes getting back on your feet way to difficult. In the US your liability on a mortgage is just the house, so people don't get chased for debt if they get fucked by a property crash.

It's also not the banks money. It is their depositors. This is the nature of a current account contract.

Football players are easy targets for spivs and bucketshops. The ones that get decent advice do very well, but many get done over by leeches.

David James has always struck me as one of the brighter and more normal footy players. Quite decent too - he bunged a lot fo his own money into POrtsmouth when it was on the brink including paying the wage bill out of his own money (everyone's not just his own).

he must have had some serious bad deals to be cleared out.

It seem relatively common for high earners to get broke - probaly very easy to get sucked into over reaching yourself.
