Recommendations for small cheap backup amp

What's Hot

I always take spare everything when out gigging. Main amp is Friedman Twin Sister,  so fair bit invested in it. Looking for  recommendations for small cheap solid state or digital amp /pedal can DI to get me out of a hole in a hurry if i pop a tube or fuse.  Preferably small and light so can transport easily.

Thx

Can  you cobble a connection to the Fender's speakers? They rarely fail so if so you could get a 100W pedal amp.

Depends what you mean by cheap. Super cheap option is one of the Joyo/Ammoon amp pedals (American Sound, British Sound etc.) which are surprisingly good for not much money at all.

Next step up is something like a Quilter Superblock or maybe the Boss IR thing.

After that you start getting into "proper money" territory (at least in my head you do).

    Laney Loudpedal.

Under £200 new, great-sounding and with options for connecting to a cabinet, power amp or straight to PA.

I’ve put one of those ice power modules in the back of my Hotrod … if the fender goes down I can move the speaker cable into the modules output and plug the last pedal into its input. Then due to the fenders captive cable I have to plug it into the mains.
This means no tone controls or even a volume but it’s cheap at and adds almost no weight at all

I had one in a Marshall combo I was using before and although I never needed it I did test it out and it was fine .. basically just a pure uncoloured power amp.

I wanted to do a post about this with instructions and photos but just not got time at the moment as any spare time is spent in the garden or on the beach.I will get to it though

I have a Joyo American  at the end of my pedal chain for emergency amp duty - sounds fine ... have a reverb pedal just before it to wet it sown a tad.
Doesn't just sound good for a cheap pedal ... it sounds good full stop ...

Those little Vox microtube jobbies. Used one at a jam night a while back and loved it, it felt and sounded genuinely brilliant.

I've got an Orange Terror Stamp as a backup. Only used it once in an emergency when my AC15 failed, but I've used it many times in rehearsals into a 4x12. It works great and it's loud enough to shout over a drummer.

I have a Quilter MicroBlock 45 in my gig bag.
Looks like a toy but it's a functioning get-out-of-jail back up amp.  Had to do nearly a whole gig with it once; no problem.
Might have to look on eBay if they've stopped doing them.

The Joyo is decent as an emergency amp replacement. It's a good call. I used to own one until I bought a FlyRig 5.

It's more money, with more options and a bit nicer tone, It has the Blonde sansamp in it and some nice bread-and-butter effects - just in case it's your pedalboard that fails, perhaps... I've never had to use it at a gig, but I've taken it to auditions and "at home" practice sessions and had a good sound.

fatcornishlad, I realise it's too late to change what you're doing, and it's a decent buy anyway,  but others may be interested :-)

Super impressed by the Joyo American. Even just using it with my HH active speaker it completely transforms the sound of my Strat - sweet as anything. Didn't seem to like the P90 in the Epi LPJ though (although the Joyo/Epi sounded epic using the fx loop on my catalyst).

What a bargain! Thanks again for the heads up.
