I'm not much of a cricket fan but one of those names that rises into public consciousness. Century on his test debut, even I know that's impressive. And from what I heard on the radio yes been unwell for a couple of years. Blimey only 55. RIP.

Sad news. What a truly great player he was. Just the right mix of grit and attacking intent - very adept at playing the right innings at the right time, which I think his career statistics show. Top fielder too. RIP.

Was shocked by this one, he was my cricketing hero growing up, I loved watching him play and always felt he could be the one to drive an English batting performance forwards. RIP

Ditto. My cricket hero too for the same ages I guess.  Scored a lot of runs when the team needed them, good defensive game if my memory serves me right.

    RIP.

I remember Gt from his early days at Surrey. I always said they picked him far too late, and he showed he was a big game player in both formats
couldn’t beleive he had 100 ish tests by his retirment

very much RIP, was few years younger than me and there was a little bit of connection there

thanks for sharing, as I hadn’t seen that

I was too young to see Ken Barrington play but through reading Wisden and countless cricket publications on Barrington, Graham Thorpe always struck me as being my generation's Barrington, someone who could attack as well as drop anchor. The sadness is that Thorpe has, like Barrington, been taken at far too young an age. Much has been written about Graham Gooch's 154* against the West Indies at Headingley in 1991. Thorpe's century against Sri Lanka matches that in my view and he played even better in the second innings to bring England home.

A seriously good player and a very good man.

Similar, it seems, to what happened to Gary Speed. Mental health is such a difficult challenge for everyone affected by it.

I'm not a cricket fan so didn't really know much about him, but it's terrible news.  Having suffered with mental health issues, reports like this make me incredibly sad and I can't help but relate to my own struggles.  Been there.  Huge respect to his family for being open about it - it's really important.

Oh crikey, that is absolutely heartbreaking.  How absolutely tragic.  And how (sadly) common in our society.

I don’t know whether this is insensitive to the thread but I would plead with anyone wanting to take their own life not to do it on the railway. It can be career ending for drivers and induce pretty strong ptsd in all those involved.
