INTRO
Time for round #42 of the Fretboard Composition Challenge.

Every few months there'll be a composition challenge. It revolves around individuals or groups of forum members composing and recording music.

No prizes for this challenge. It's just for fun, a spur to creating, sharing, discussing music/recording and learning. Plus a way of testing the water with your creations and getting some feedback.

GUIDELINES - THEME
In an attempt to encourage more entries, there's no theme for this one - so it's freestyle
You can specify your own theme or the genre you're aimimg for.

Compose a tune, or recycle something you've composed previously. So you can treat it as a creative exercise or just vehicle to get you music heard and commented on.

Picture: In addition to the music, try to create your own picture that relates to your selected theme/title. This isn't mandatory.

DATES AND VOTING
The submission deadline is midnight 20th November 2024
Voting will start soon after the submission deadline and run for about two weeks, with each voter selecting their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.

First choice gets 5 points - Second choice gets 3 points - Third choice gets 1 point
The entry with the most points wins.
The order and scores of the three people with the most votes will be announced soon after the voting ends.

SUBMISSION DETAILS
All recordings and pictures need to be sent via email to Compositions@theFB.co.uk
Songs to be submitted in mp3 format.
Pictures to be in jpg or png format.

    One on its way.

Not sure whether this would be classed as ultra-punk or thrash-metal or death-doom or whatever?
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

I'm working on an entry - a bit of an anthemic shoegazy thing. The rhythm tracks are sounding good - as always the next bit is the real challenge - lyrics and vocals.... Yikes.

  • Recording this weekend with the band, so hopefully, for the first time I'll be able to enter a track that doesn't sound like it was recorded with a potato :)

Cheers. My entry is unashamedly a Halloween song, so will be well out of date by the completion close date!

No, not sure what that is. The Synths are mostly the analog model within Cubasis (iPad version of Cubase) with some of my Korg Monologue hardware synth thrown in.

I'm drafting a few ideas for my entry at the moment.

But I'm struggling with lyrics that interest me enough, and that aren't just what i normally do (words about the sea, going home, dying, "woe is me" etc etc). Would anybody be kind enough to give me any feedback on what i normally do lyrically and how i might improve things?

I appreciate that i do mumble a bit whilst singing, plus with my weird slight lisp while singing (not present when talking), it's possible that nobody actually hears what my lyrics are haha but any pointers on something that might tip me off in a better (or at least a different) direction would be great

I've finally finished recording my prospective entry - over a month working on the one song.... I haven't a clue if it's good or bad - although I haven't got to the point that I can't bear listening to it. So that's something...

I'm going to leave it until next week, then consider an approach to mixing. Go with my amateur trial and error approach, or ask someone else to do it.

No, it's not just you. I noticed a problem earlier.

The playlist seems to be a bit intermittent. Sometimes refreshing the page, makes it show correctly.

I'm not sure what's going on.

    It's not a competition.

I've listened to your lyrics and your singing. I must like them as you often get my votes in both the composition and cover challenges! There was one of you compositions though (forget which) that I thought 'blimey, this is depressing'.

If you feel you're in a rut you could try another source for the words. For example https://www.freesonglyrics.co.uk/index.html , but I'm not keen on their usage rules.

As a last resort you could always use one of the so called AI lyric writing sites.
