Cool rock musicians - are there any these days?

What's Hot
OffsetOffset Frets: 13929
In days of yore, we had Hendrix - possibly one of the coolest rock icons there's ever been.  Paul McCartney in the late '60s-early '70s (beard phase) was pretty bloody cool.  David Bowie in certain incarnations was ACAF.  Steve Marriott - yep, cool.  Jim Morrison - smelly and pissed, but undoubtedly cool.  Bryan Ferry - tick.  Chris Spedding with V - absolutely.  Gram Parsons (I still want a Nudie suit).  Robbie Robertson - also cool as fuck.  Plenty I've omitted of course, but... now fast-forward to today...

With one exception, I'm stumped off the top of my head.  Is that because of my age?   That one exception is Jay Buchanan, who aside from having one of my fave rock voices and being in a brilliant band, is absolutely sub-zero.

Other candidates?

There are thousands of cool musicians out there, they just don't really register with us because it's not our age now. All of those names you cited would probably be seen as weird freaks now and folks that are currently cool wont seem it to the over *insert your age here*

Depends on what your definition of cool is. A lot of the things I used to think were cool, I now just don't. The whole guns n roses /slash rock star thing - binge drinking, chain smoking, being on drugs, wearing leather jackets and sunglasses is definitely not cool to me now.

  • I would imagine to the relevant audience Yungblud would be classed as cool.

I didn't know who he was - but now that I've looked him up I know his band.  I'd have to say, from my point of view this is anything but cool....

But of course it's entirely subjective.  People I regard as cool would be regarded as the 180-degree opposite, by most.

They tend to sound factory-made Uli Jon Roth laments the lack of tone and expression among young guitarists

I've just consulted with my guitar playing nephew and he said the guys from Fontaines D.C. are supercool. He actually got me listening to them, and they do seem to be very popular with the younger generation.

Probably the coolest cross generation rock star I can think of. My Dad in his 70’s watched a “Ringo” style discussion video featuring DG and commented on how cool a guy he seemed. I think he’s cool. Animal from the muppets thinks he’s cool. My daughter at 28 does. The gen Z crew attending Glastonbury seem to.

I don't know if that was a serious question or not, but it's Uli Jon Roth.
